Alphabetical index subdivided into groups of 50 records - how?
I have a database containing 8000 records. There is a field in this database called 'alpha_small' which takes the first letter of each record and using WebMerge, I use the 'Name based on contents of field' to make a new index page each time 'alpha_small' changes. This is great, it means that I have a separate index page for each letter of the alphabet.

Now, the thing is, I have over 700 entries in this database which start with the letter 'a'! What I want to do is split up each letter of the alphabet into pages with no more than 50 entries. Of course, this would be easy using 'Make new Index page when - a number of records is reached - 50' but obviously, I can't sort the index pages using that and 'Name based on contents of field'.

So, this is my problem. How do I do both?

Well, I managed to figure a way around it that works satisfactorily enough.

Using MS Access SQL, I chopped the table down into 27 queries. 0-9 and A through to Z.

Then, I exported all of these as text files and ran 27 separate settings files in WebMerge. In fact, I had to use this database for four separate indexes, meaning 108 settings files... a record, maybe?

Anyway, it worked and without too much hassle.

You have a rare gift, heisje: I can rarely tell when you're being sincere and when you're being sarcastic.

I'm working on the Psychic Build feature, in which you can just think about how you want your site to look and WebMerge will understand and build it. But that won't be until v44.4.

Before then I am working on a new file format in which what are currently multiple settings files will be stored in one file. While this may sound like a great thing for Mark, it will actually only be slightly more convenient in terms of the number of clicks needed to specify such a setup.

What _will_ help Mark (and the rest of us) is the query feature I'm working on for v3.x. But first I need to get v2.5 done, and I'm glad to see Mark found the solution he was working for with acceptable effort.

    richard, what a relief:
I was afraid the Psychic Build feature would not be available before v69.0

    great news!

No, long before v69.0. While the main thrust of version 44.4 will be psychic builds, v69.0 will replace the FTP functionality currently in the product with interplanetary transport, with robots physically carrying your pages to shoppers on Marts or Io.

You mentioned "Marts", so now I am interested.

I have a mailing list with 1 million Martian names waiting for me to put up some Martian Sites.

If you ever make a version that works on Marts, just let me know ASAP.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe I should have italicized the "Anyway, it worked and without too much hassle."

    Looking forward to version 69!
