    Adwords
This is an adwords question for you pro's that use it. Why the heck when you enter your keywords and click estimate it tells me I'm number one for the obscure words I have selected and the after a short while of being active I'm at 39 lol.. not very accurate is it.

The joy of adwords :-) . What bugs me is that you cannot totally delete old ad groups

The adwords estimating system is very temperamental. Also remember, that it has an extra value, your average CTR, that is used in the formula to give you an estimate.

For instance, if your average CTR for that specific adgroup is high, then your estimates will be higher than those of someone who has alow CTR. So, if your CTR is the highest it can be network wide, then you may get 100 estimated clicks at $1.00 CPC for a term whereas the guy with a lower average CTR would have to bid like $5.00 per click just to get near that number.

gotta love Adwords, or not. LOL

I suspect they do this in hopes of you making the (deleted) campaign active again

I think it probably also has something to do with keeping the historical data easily available.

True, this is indeed annoying, but you can select "Show only active campaigns" in the middle drop-down menu, that helps clear-up the clutter.
