Anybody got this working? Ping your sitemap to Google?
I've setup an account and put my sitmap through all the testing via Google's sitemap page. So now I'm ready to submit my sitemaps automatically via ping.

Google returns the 200 ok response code but I don't see that it's downloaded the sitemaps. The ones I submit through the web site are downloaded about twice a day so.....?

I'm using ASP and a Get command.

I've searched Google and read message boards and nada. Anybody using the ping? Does it work for you?

    no
Zipping them is optional besides they are very small. Like I said, if I use the web page that Google provides for the exact same sitemaps, they process fine.

Now I'm trying to automate it with their ping feature. It just doesn't seem like enough people are using sitemaps in general to much of a knowledge base to ask from.

Yes, and I finally got a thread started on Webmasterworld.

Apparently, nobody seems to be using this.

I've never found the need to use it. If you give Google the address of your sitemap file, it'll pick it up very regularly.

But what works? The sitemap or the ping???

The ping does NOT work. I've tested it extensively.

I've used GET, HEAD and POST. Nada.

Yes, I was interested to see that Google is pulling my sitemap files twice a day all by itself. I have them auto-generated by my content management system, so they're always up to date. Kind of nice that the "ping" seems to be redundant.

I use it and I get a reply from Google.

Of course as others have said, google picks up the sitemap at least once a day without my ping.

Are you sure you're URL encoding the location to the sitemap? Are you using an XMLHttpPost or WinHttp to make the HTTP request? Also, have you tried submitting the ping request in a browser to see if that request works? If this works for you, then your code is probably the culprit. Perhaps posting your ASP code would also help. I have this working fine in .NET using HttpWebRequests and HttpWebResponses.
