Very sad news for my family
It is with a sad heart I tell you that my father passed away early this morning, due to complications from his cancer and its treatment. He died with me and his family around him and in the arms of my mother, his wife of 53 years. He will be missed beyond words.

Dad had many setbacks right from the beginning last October and unfortunately he did not respond well to the chemotherapy, which later created numerous complications and over 120 days in the hospital. He last entered the hospital on April 23 and had been doing well enough that he went to a specialty rehab hospital a couple weeks ago. Although not strong enough to do much for himself after being in bed for so long he had rallied at the end and was even doing well at eating some solid foods, which he had not done for nearly six months because of his stomach cancer.

Tuesday he had an incident where his blood pressure dropped very low, which they believe was a result of a blood infection, one of many infections he has had to fight off with a compromised immunity system. Sadly, it took his life early this morning.

Dad had full use of his mental facilities up until the very end and was rarely in pain, which we are very thankful for. Much can be said for the wonderful, tireless care of his hospital care givers, but especially that of my mother who would spend nearly all day at his side assisting with his care as much as she could and keeping him company.

Although dad was not the active man we all remember, I will cherish all the special time we got to spend together these many months. There were some bright moments along the way that we are thankful for. One especially exciting one was on his birthday in March during his first visit to the local casino since being diagnosed. Within the first half hour at a quarter slot machine he won $1000.00! He told us it was the best birthday he had ever had. He and my mother were only able to make a couple more trips to the casino because of his limited strength, but it was something he wanted to do and I know he enjoyed every minute of it. My folks were fequent visitors of Las Vegas and were so good at getting comps they rarely paid for rooms or meals. And rarely came home with less than took!!! It was something fun they enjoyed doing together.

Thank you all for your support and warm wishes I have received here ABW. I cannot tell you how much it meant to me. Next time any of you are at a casino, please drop a quarter in a slot machine for my dad. Iím certain it will bring a smile to his face.

Our condolences Ron. Hold on to the memories. Talk about them as much as possible and even write them down whenever you can.
Although now is a time to mourn, try to find any reason you can to laugh. It might be tough, but if your Dad was anything like mine was (old school, "greatest generation"), he would want you to find something to laugh about as often as possible when you think about him.
