For a beginner, a sole proprietorship is definitely the simplest.

Check with a local business tax accountant, though. What works best depends on your own situation, your area, etc.

Yeah, I'm developing a small affiliate site to begin with... to learn the process better. Then I'd like to develop more sites, but I want make sure I'm starting off the right way.

When you have more than one affiliate site... is it better to start an 'umbrella' company where all the sites are listed below it are ''doing business as"....

Or if your a sole proprietor can you list different sites as dba's?

I gotta break out the business books!

Lots of options, but I'd say sole proprietor is a good way to start. If you start making a LOT of money, you can look elsewhere, but don't let ANYONE talk you into incorporating without looking VERY closely into it.

And when/if you incorporate, make sure you understand the difference between a C and S Corp. A "C Corp" (the normal, default one!) is seldom best.

I have one DBA and many different sites. Don't want to run and get a dba everytime I buy a domain name, nor do I want multiple bank accounts.
