    Angry ABW Link Exchange Welshing
I just wanted to make sure everybody double checks their ABW link exchanges. I hadn't checked mine for a few weeks and today I noticed that two ABW members have welshed on their link partnership with me. This really angers me because I didn't receive the request to remove the link through email or PM. They probably figured I wouldn't notice and would continue to send free traffic their way. This is stealing and I won't have it. If you've done this to other webmasters, shame on you!

Last year that happened to me but worse the sites were sold and they became porn sites. I dont do much link exchanges here anymore. Actually I don't do link exchanges at all anymore. I feel your pain I have been there myself.

I still do link exchanges, but only when there's traffic between the links. The SEO based relationships are held lightly by some people. I have some good link partners who I share links with between a couple of our sites. As long as there's traffic going both ways, we've got a good fit and maintain it. It's a tricky business, but as long as everybody takes it seriously, it's very effective.

Scott, You will always find link welshers.... that's what makes exchanging links a lot of work. Just when you think you've seen all the bull@$^% tricks they play..... They come up with something new.

I have a linking program that checks the reciprocating link and about once every other month i fiscally check all my link partners....it takes a lot of time but it's worth it.

    Dave,

Then, I just may have to build my own reciprocal link checker.

I believe you should check your links at least one a month. You should also carefully check out your link partners. Some scams I've seen include:

    • Posting your link and then moving or removing it a couple months later.
    • They want you to link to www.theirsite.com but they link back from links.theirsite.com, which has no PR or traffic since nobody is linking to it.
    • Sites using no follow instructions to their links pages

I now check my link partners using Arelis and when I first set it up and added my link partners, I found around 40% of my links back were gone.

If a site links to me, it's their responsibility to notify me if my link is moved or removed. If Arelis reports the link is missing, I check the page and if no link is found, I remove their link. No searching, no emails, I'm not wasting my time trying to figure out what they did with my link. There's too many webmasters out there who would rather steal a link than earn it or trade for it.

I don't do many link exchanges anywhere, but out of the ones I did, I've run into things, too. Not from people here, that I know of, but the people who've seen my link exchange pages and written for links...

Sometimes the link just disappears, sometimes the other site dies (404) with no notice. If the link is just moved, I don't really care about that, provided that where it's moved to isn't some unspiderable or unrankable place.

As for sites changing their nature, I did come across a guy who built PR for his site and then switched them for domain-parkish search pages. It said it was a domain park, but I think he put that on there himself. Before, they had been content sites with no apparent method of monetization (not even CPM banners), which had raised my suspicions. The sad thing about that was, he'd probably have made more if he left them alone and put ads on, than in the 1 month or so they'd have kept their ranks. By the time I saw the change, they'd already been banned.

Unfortunately, what got me to check again was a mystery penalty my site encountered. Since I had no fishy SEO on it, I started wondering if it was who I was linking to... and it was! Now I check my links (manually) a lot more often...
