    What would entice inactive affiliates?
    Hello all,

I recently took over affiliate marketing duties at UncommonGoods.com. As I am working on it, I discovered we have a lot of inactive affiliates. By Linkshare's definition, an inactive affiliate is an affiliate who has not generated 1 click in the last 30 days, which I think is a good enough metric.

What I would like to know is what would make affiliates want to start promoting a merchant whose program they already joined?
Any specific tools, promotions that interests you?

    Thanks for your replies,

with a low click count, you have to consider two basic things first:

did they ever put up links?

are their sites in the doldrums now as opposed to earlier when the search engines were being friendly to them? can you see history?

I quit promoting uncommon goods after they refused to pay what it said I was owed in the linkshare interface. Does uncommon goods still pay the affiliates or have they switched now to linkshare paying us?

    Heidi,

We joined Linkshare's consolidated payments, so all payments, regardless of the amount, is paid to Linkshare every month. And all commissions before the consolidated payment started was included in March 2005 payment.

I am sorry to hear you were not paid what you were owed. Please e-mail me with your information at samib@uncommongoods.com and I will look into it.

Sami - I was paid the majority of it and it was a few years ago now, I have no idea any more what the difference was between what I received and what I was supposed to receive according to the reports. Supposedly there had been a problem with the way the reporting was working - it was reporting the amount with shipping included instead of just the retail price totals. It was how the previous person handled the whole situation that really ticked me off and made me quit promoting uncommon goods.

I do feel better about it all with them now being part of consolidated payment and will reconsider my position about promoting uncommon goods - I do like the products you carry.

Thanks for the offer to help - but its water under the bridge now.

To make me active you'd have to leave LS.

I do like your products by the way. I've even purchased a few things.

Considering your corporate policies you're a much better fit with a responsible, ethical network like SAS.

I started promoting them when they first arrived at Linkshare. They never adopted individual product showcases or DRM displays. They showed up on BHO merchnat lists and never bothered with ABW. I dropped their exposure to a few links after years of poor conversion ratios.

An email to affiliates can sometimes help as a reminder.

    Heidi,

I understand it was more of an attitude problem. I do not know how the affiliate program was managed 2 years ago, but I am new here and I will make sure affiliates will be treated as they should, and provide tools and assistance to help our program grow affiliates' earnings grow. So, I would be glad if you give us another chance.

    Rhea,

I understand your view and I am an affiliate myself, but for now we will be with LS. I am going through all of our LS interface to make the best of Linkshare, I think you will like it. Since you know our products, you know how they can add value to any website they're on. So, come on board!

    ecomcity,

Thank you for pointing out what's wrong with our program. As I said, I just started here and come to you guys at ABW for ideas and communication. We now added new Indiviudual Products and 7 new Storefronts at Linkshare. You should check us out again.

I really love Uncommon Goods, but can't seem to get good conversions. A datafeed I didn't have to jump through hoops to get (or break my bank) would certainly be a plus. Just my two cents.

Find a way to give us more hours in the day. That's been my limiting factor in doing affiliate stuff lately. :-)

    Hi, Sami B,

Your home page took 1 minute and 40 seconds to load up on my dialup (24Kbps) here in the boonies.

Just thought that I would mention it.

Unfortunatly I think 24k users account for less than 1% of internet users.

Do something nice for my wife... then she'd nag me everyday about returning the favor and she'd tell me to get active with you... I'll do anything to shut her up... errr... I mean to make her happy.

The man who owns the local ISP here in the Texas Hill Country gets 12Kbps at his home. We have a very antiquated telephone system here.

I do go nuts, especially as more and more sites overload their pages with far too many graphics. I browse a lot with graphics turned off.

I may get a satellite connection sometime in the future when prices are affordable.

Right now, I am just grateful to have a good computer, too much old computer stuff and an Internet connection. Life is very hard in the hills.

    Best,

Thank you all for your insight.

I decided that Donuts' idea best suits us. Make your significant other happy so they will remind you why you should promote us, hopefully, everyday.

Seriuosly, I just took over this job, and realized there are many things I need to do get this program to its true potential. I would always like you guys to join me and give uncommongoods.com a new chance, and you will it's wort it.

Should you have any questions, requests, concerns now you know that there is someone who will get back to you ASAP.

Basically Sami from my (limited) experience you've got to offer them something to get activated. Most of the successful affiliates are running 10's-100's of programs and they need a good reason to justify spending time promoting your program. It always is going to boil down to $$$'s...It is a big challenge and I have yet to see the killer solution.

I think ultimately the best way forward is to pick up the telephone (after an introductory email of course) and have a chat with them and see what you can do together. Form a partenrship...

With affiliate marketing the 80:20 rule doesn't work. It is more like 95:5 plus...If you can recruit/activate the 5% of affiliates who are earners and make 95% of the sales you'll have a program that earns well...

Thank you, James. Our affiliate program has been running for more than 5 years, but unfortunately it has not been managed properly, until now. Like you said, it's a big challenge, and need to be worked on gradually, and I am ready for it.

    Andy,

I would love to come to your conference in Miami. I will talk management about it.
