Very interesting! Wonder if things will improve now, or whether they will get even worse than what they are at the moment. Only time will tell I suppose.

    My questions are...

    Is it worth it?

Was it on the chopping block for too little?

Does this mean that Linkshare saw the light at the end of the tunnel?

Is this going to be good for affiliates?

ValueClick Pays $128 million for BeFree (all-stock deal mind you) but still!
ValueClick Pays $58 million for CJ (combination of stock and cash)
Rakuten, Inc. Pays $425 million for LinkShare ?!?!?

wowzers! Mr. Messer will be no doubt living the high life from this point forward! But the press release doesn't state if it is an all cash deal or like ValueClicks aquisition of CJ a combination of cash and stock. Either way that is an insane amount of money!!

No wonder Azoogle's MPort is jumping into this market.. MaxBounty too..

I am floored that someone would pay that much for LinkShare considering it's tarnished reputation it has honestly earned with us affiliates!

I guess everything is now apparent why all these upgrades were f**ked up and LinkShare didn't really seem to care about how much it was frustrating us. They have no doubt known about this potential aquisition for some time now!

Way to go Stepehen... You got paid!!

Now if I could only get a commision for around 1,000th of that amount, I'd be one happy affiliate!

I think it's going to take them quite a while to straighten out the mess at LS and quite a while longer to restore the confidence of merchants and affiliates.

I'm going to guess that the Messers will be kept on for a period of time as employees to facilitate the transition. That's typically what's done when a company whose major assets are its clients is sold.

From my POV things can only improve as I've pretty much eliminated all LS links on my sites.

I was actually surprised they got it for as little as $425 million. Especially considering MySpace was purchased for around $580 million and Shopzilla.com went for around $560 million. I guess the going price for big sites like these is between $400 million and $600 million.

I can't believe ValueClick paid so little for CJ, they certainly got a deal there.

Seems like they're more than just staying for a period of time, but I may be wrong.

"LinkShare's senior management team, including Mr. Messer and LinkShare's President and COO, Heidi Messer, will remain with the company."

Looks like Ron was right with his speculations. Good call, Ron!

It was an all cash transaction.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Japanese purchase makes sense as LinkShare Japan has been doing pretty well from what we have seen.

Perhaps there'll be more Japan based Events from here on, no Visa problems there

    Cheers

You know, folks may have thought I was a bit harsh when things were not going well for us all, but I said all along that the changes being made were not being done in the interests of the affiliates. I suspected that Mr. Messer was trying to sell when I sat back and looked at the big picture. But what really hit home was when LS employees told me there were rumors at the NY office of a sale.

Haiko said it best: Smoke + mirrors + Athena = $425MM

Wonder just how this will affect the "Trust" factor now with affiliates. I know how I feel. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Haiko, please change my description by my Avatar. Remove the LS stuff as I'm done with them. Not after all this crap we had to put up with this summer just so Mr. Messer could sell his company.

I feel sorry for the good employees who were duped just like we were.

So you still saying I'm throwing out false claims, Mr. Messer?
And I see you here, Mr. Messer, reading this thread. Bet you are just grinning while you count your money and admire your cunning this year.

Shall we again debate my "false claims"? (http://forum.abestweb.com/showthread...696#post443696)

Well here's my thought from a merchant perspective.

We basically have LinkShare being bought by a Merchant... so there are going to be concerns from merchants in competiting sectors over how this will pan out I believe.

    Cheers

A bittersweet day. Sweet that Snare's finally been eaten! Bitter, that the Messers got so much money for it.
I wanted them to go to an island, but I was thinking more along the lines of Riker's than Hawaii!

"LinkShare's senior management team, including Mr. Messer and LinkShare's President and COO, Heidi Messer, will remain with the company."
LOL that's what most buyers say about the old owners. For a while.

But sooner or later, the broom comes out. I don't think the Snareites have the skill to pull a Warner Bros (ie, Borging the buyers). That leaves the highway...

As for what I think of that $425 million, I think it'd make a great donation to the Spitzer Fund. Certainly Spitzer can pull some law out of his rear, that lets him go after the CEO personally for things that happened before the company was ditched!

Also, I take this as absolute proof that DotCom Bubble 2.0 is in full release mode.

How do you fugure that? for a firm their size and type looking to enter the US market, buying up a marketing channel is probably the most cost effective way to do it. They now have access to all the affiliates within that network within multiple chanels that they work in.

    Cheers

I think this now explains why we never saw Mr. Messer here posting prior to the Athena fiasco and then during Athena when both affiliates and merchants were all in an uproar he was posting several times a day. He was worried about the upcoming deal and was trying to defuse the situation.

And that brings me to his next to the last post on June 3 when he left and his empty promise: "I am very happy to do a moderated chat, however I have to ask if we can do it right after the symposium." Well, it never happened. Wonder if this thread will bring him out of hiding again and how much folks will believe of what he says? Should be interesting to say the least.

"Morgan Stanley advised Rakuten, Inc., and Goldman Sachs advised LinkShare in the transaction." ~ From the news release.

    - Wow! Those Goldman Sachs people really earned their commission.

    - With the same valuation, I think ABW would go around $42.5 million. Haiko, my multi-millionaire buddy! How are you?

    - I am seriously thinking of starting my own network.

    - Valueclick is now worth about 1.24 billion. Assuming 1/4 of it is CJ, it values CJ for 310 million, at worst. $58 mil into $310 mil within 2 years? WOWWWWWW!

It may be time for the Messer to reimburse all the money stolen from their affiliates during the dot.com burst.
They can't say anymore they are keeping that money to save LinkShare.

We'll see in the future who got screwed. Japanese usually don't buy what they can't manage to make a profit with (even if my phrase seems to have no sense at all, you'll probably understand anyway)
