    Zombie Processes
Can anyone help me (in plain language) with the definition of "Zombie" processes? What are they?

    Thanks a lot in advance,

    Geno, did you read this?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zombie_process

The way I understand it when a child process finishes executing the parent process is notified and the memory allocated to the child process becomes available to the system again.

It sounds like the child process goes into standby mode until the parent process acknowledges receipt of notification of termination of the child process. I have no idea how any of this is coded...I'm not a programmer.

No, Rhea, I haven't read this. What is a "child process" as opposed to "parent process"?

    Geno,

That be me then. LOL I've been working on four hours sleep a night all week. I don't even turn off the coffee pot anymore.

Neil is right. Let's get back to the topic. All serious affiliates, PM me. We'll talk. But for now I'd love to get the "zombie" issue straightened out...

    Thanks, everyone!

A parent process is just a program that calls another program. The program it calls is the child program. See the relationship of the two? The child program doesn't run independently of the parent. The parent program determines whether the child program needs to run and it may even provide some of the critical data the child program needs to perform its operations.

And no, Neil, I'm really not a programmer. I've programmed in macro languages but any *real* programmer will tell you that's stuff.

You may want to rethink that...Lack of sleep is the mother of errors! Like, meta-tags left describing the wrong merchant, bad SEO, typos, total gibberish sales copy...

Not that I've *ever* done pages under the influence of caffeine.

BTW Google results seem to indicate that Rhea's answer is right:

Zombie processes are processes that have stopped responding. They take up memory and processor load, and can eventually cause a machine to crash. Rebooting is the easiest way to get rid of them.

On Unix, iirc, a zombie has been killed but can't completely go away because some other process hasn't acknolwedged the death yet, usually a parent process. fork(), SIGCHILD, all that stuff I half-remember. They don't necessarily hog resources because they are basically a placeholder at that point, but if there's a lot of them, some internal process/handle table could probably get clogged.

The parent program has to acknowledge that the child program has terminated before it can be killed. The probable reason is that the parent program has more operations to perform but can't do that until the child completes executing. Basically the parent is paused until the child executes. When the child executes it's put on hold until the parent acknowledges that it's completed running.

Keeps them from stepping on each other's toes.
