    Blank Pages
I have a blank page that keeps getting created along with a folder that gets named http:

The blank page is referenced on the index with a blank picture and no linked text- the page itself is a details page that contains no information, except the text I added on the template.

Incidentally, all the other detail pages are perfect except for ones inside subfolders (not all of them). Those pages display all the text, full urls (not linked) and everything else including the delimiters.

Where do I look to fix this?

Thanks bunches and bunches in advance.

Somewhere in your datafeed file, there is a record with a slash "/" They can usually be found in the field name that you are using to build the webpages.

For example, you might be building pages based on part numbers like "92837eej67," but if you get one like this "388A88/FD4." It will end up creating a folder called "FD4," with a file in it called "FD4.HTML"

You should always do a search and replace with excél (or whatever tool you use) finding the slash "/" and replacing it with a dash "-."

Let us know how it turns out

With the folder name being http: it looks like you're trying to use an URL as the naming field. Needless to say, if you de-slash a URL, it won't work as a link anymore. So if you need those URLs to keep working (for instance if it's the buyurl or something like that), it'd be much better to use a completely different field to name your pages after.

If it's not an URL field that you're naming your pages with, then what BuyOnline said.

I'm naming the feilds based on category, subcategory and category + subcategory

I suspect it's the category + subcategory section so I'll check for the slash there first.

    Thanks

    Yes,

I have a datafeed where the Category have Home/Family and unless you remove the / from there Home Family, it will make a /Family directory under the Home category.

Just keep an eye for those / , sometimes on a big datafeed there are only a few of those and are not too easy to spot just by looking at the feed, I always seach for those characters before I build all the pages.

I might not be understanding this completely.

My categories have slashes in them as do my subcategories and categories + subcategories sections. Should I remove all the slashes and hyphenate them instead.

------thinking out loud: maybe my categories should have "/" so they would create sub-folders but my subcategories and cat+subcat shouldn't have "/"

Am I getting closer with understanding this?

I must apologize if I'm babbling.....I babble under extreme pressure and I'm under tremendous pressure to produce the pages soon.

If you base the names of pages (Index or Details) based on records/fields that contain slashes, you will have issues. Some actually use the slashes to build sub-directories.

However, in the example you use above, you should change the slashes to something else - dashes work fine for many, and look good to visitors that need to see the category name.

I think what's needed is a way to escape slashes so that WebMerge doesn't interpret them as directives to create folders.

The most popular way to escape characters is with a backslash -- would "\/" be too confusing? Any other suggestions for an escape sequence?

I'd like to post an update with that soon, so your suggestions will be very helpful.

Backslash is good. Staying with conventions for regular expressions are good.

Hmmm....on further thought, the escape character may not be as useful as a checkbox on the Index Pages tab, since it would require modification to the data.

    Opinions on which is better?

My input in this regard would be useless considering I'm one of the most confused on board LOL

Ok, so far I've changed the slashes to hyphens and I'm reading buy-onlines datafeed info
(the site is excellent) - but it brings about another question. Excel? Must I have this to clean up my datafeeds?

Also, when I try and build the pages, I get an error : error processing record 357 (and then error...361)....and it's still trying to create a folder named "http-" which I cannot find anywhere in the feed. I did a search !!!????

I apologize if I'm too slow at grasping this

    Not necessarily!

You can try this, it's FREE: Crimson Editor

Crimson Editor is a professional source code editor for Windows.
This program is not only fast in loading time, but also small in size (so small that it can be copied in one floppy disk).
While it can serve as a good replacement for Notepad, it also offers many powerful features for programming languages such as HTML, C/C++, Perl and Java.

Search for "HTTP://" rather than "HTTP-", since WebMerge changes test in a field to make it suitable for valid file names.

It seems you're using a field that contains a URL as the field which determines the file name.

    I'll give that a try.

    I'm using category, sub-category and cat+subcat

Could it be that one of the spaces has a URL where it should have the category, sub-cat etc. ?
