Rita - ARC may be closed for a few days...
Yes, I know, we are over it as well...i'm becoming an expert at shutter deployment and installation....

Rita is expected to reach us at a Cat 1, possibly a Cat 2. It is now forecasted to go right under the keys, but we are in the cone and any slight jog to the north and we are looking at a direct hit from this lady.....

Definitely will be getting hit with heavy winds, heavy rainfall and hurricane force winds...how strong depends on how close the eye moves north....

The Floridy Keys will get a good hit from this one, unfortunatley they won't dodge this one, even the old time conchs are evacuating....

    http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/grap...708.shtml?prob

We will pray and hope for the best......

Batton down the hatches Captain. Hopefully this one will only be a rain and wind storm for you.

    Scoot,

11:00 Advisory has you in the watch as well, the eye jogged up a few notches so you need to keep an eye out as well.

You may get tropical storm winds in your area....

    I'm off to install shutters...

Maybe think about rolling shutters. I think they're kind of pricey but they roll down and lock protecting windows and doors and roll back up when not needed. They're pretty cool.

Good luck Andy and everyone in the Southeast!

For the first time this year - we are actually getting prepared here in South Texas. It's really early for us, but so far most of the models have Rita headed straight for us.

Galveston Island will possibly start voluntary evac tomorrow afternoon.

I live 2 miles from Galveston Bay, so we will prepare to leave Wednesday afternoon if Rita continues to follow the models.

I just pray the storm doesn't turn toward NOLA as one model has predicted!

Personally, I prefer my Rita top-shelf, on the rocks, no salt please!

    Yep,
You gotta get out. It looks like it is going to hit Texas somewhere between Beaumont and Brownsville. Galveston is right in the center of the cone at this time.
    Best of luck!

All I can say is here we go again!

I just finished putting up shutters on my house and my brothers and my
dads are up as well. Well lets hope and pray for the best.

Best of luck to all those involved with this. I just hope I don't loose
    power again like with Katrina.

Hopefully we'll all talk soon again none the worse for wear.

Everyone stay safe! It does look like it is coming in here, unless things change. So, I will be packing up and heading north on Thursday.

This is crazy - can't find an available hotel within 300 miles of Houston! We may have to go as far as Dallas.

Kim, do what you must but get out if they call for evacuations...

Rita, a so-called Category 2 storm with 100 mph (166 kph) winds, is moving into the Gulf's warm waters, where it will strengthen in the next few days, the National Hurricane Center said. Rita may reach Category 4 or Category 5, with winds from 131 mph to more than 155 mph, by the time it reaches the Texas coastline this weekend, the center said.

While Rita is forecast to land anywhere from Corpus Christi to Galveston in Texas, it may veer east and strike Louisiana's coast, the center said. The threat to the region devastated by Katrina prompted New Orleans's mayor to halt plans for residents to return and Texas officials to call for some evacuations.

``We are urging all residents from south Texas to Louisiana to keep watch,'' center meteorologist Robbie Berg said.

Rita, the ninth hurricane of the season, was about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south-southwest of Key West, Florida, as of 5 p.m. local time, the center said. The storm is moving west at about 15 mph (24 kph).

Galveston Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas said she may order mandatory evacuations from the city of about 60,000 as soon as tomorrow. Galveston, about 50 miles southeast of Houston, is the site of the worst natural disaster in U.S. history, a hurricane that killed 8,000 to 12,000 in 1900.

No. That was due to a lack of meteorological forcasting equipment and mass communications.

Kim - if you are still trying to locate a hotel, try the little cities west of Dallas in Parker County. We were able to find a few there.

Just upgraded to a cat 4, predicting a cat 5 (155+ mph) upon landfall....

Let's not even leave an opening for horsehockey to pop up in posts. Haiko just had to close 2 forums.

kmkimmo and ebudae hope you fair well with the storm. Same for all the rest in TX. Hopefully the storm will take a track where the most intense parts of the storm goes over sparsely populated areas.

Honestly, I am scared - but at least we will be safe.

    Hey Andy,

I just replied to your email. Yep, we are okay... finally have power and internet access so I can try to catch up on all of this work that has been put off because of Katrina.

You guys in the path of this new one take care... it looks like it is going to be another bad one. You will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers.

    Be safe.
