A paradoxical post about Trust and Like...
As far as I am concerned, I have noticed lately that in this affiliate marketing business, when it comes to the question of Trust and or Like about merchants, networks and search engines, there is a paradox.

    1) Any one network:

1a) We may not like that network but, we stay there because our best merchants are there.
1b) We may not trust that network but, we stay there because our best merchants are there and we're making money with some merchants on that network.

    2) Any one merchant:

2a) We may not like that merchant but, we stay with that merchant because we're making money with that merchant.
2b) We may not trust that merchant but, we stay with that merchant because that merchant is on a network we trust and we're getting paid.
2c) We may not trust that merchant but, we stay with that merchant because that merchant is on a network we like and we're getting paid.

    3) Any one search engine:

3a) We may not like that search engine because our pages are not listed there but, we use that search engine first, because it's a famous search engine.
3b) We may not trust that search engine because our pages are listed way too far under other crap sites that steal our content or just spam the search engines and somehow are listed before our good content pages but, we use that search engine first, because it's a famous search engine.

But, before anyone ask me I will say this today:

I still like everyone but, I realize that I must , C'est la vie.

Sal, with all due respect...you forgot respect.

    My hierarchy is:

    #1: Trust the network/merchant
    #2: Respect the network/merchant/AM/products
    #3: Like the AM

    Not really!

    Rhea,

I respect all the networks, merchants, AM's and search engines, even if I don't trust or like some of them.

    That's why I didn't mention any names.

But when it comes to "products", (since you mentioned), there're some products that I will not respect, regardless of who is selling it or promoting it.

For example: I will never have any respect for any porno product, regardless if I like and trust the product, merchant, network or AM promoting it, not even if one day I decide to become a pimp.

I can give a lot of examples, but I am not that stupid, I won't make a hole any deeper than the ladder I can carry.

Sal, I think maybe we're on a different page.

My list is about the three criteria I want in an affiliate relationship, and the order of importance to me. When all three criteria are present then the affiliate relationship is working at maximum.

What does that have to do with porn?

Well when the .com bombs hit the networks and multi millions in commissions never got paid, the Trust issue was at a all time low. In 2001 us affiliate demanded and got network CEO attention in a CashPile forum specifically setup to address the trust issue. Trust in more transparent reporting, getting timely payment, and demands for longer cookie return days. ABW was started on the trust issue.

I helped prove BF and LS could be trusted based upon the honesty of the individual merchant AM's who could overcome the networks reporting failings and advertising mindset. TigerDirect and Overstock were planted right here under fire to change their dead programs into winners if they followed the pro-affiliate paths I outlined for both. Proof of a programs success was in the number of checks cut monthly to a growing affiliate base using higher conversion landing pages. Trust came from the AM's close attention to making sure EVERY sale got posted and weekly AM test purchases to verify tracking. Trust was earned one good AM at a time.

Today, 4 years later I have NO TRUST in any network. I still trust certain merchants do report, regardless of the holes in network tracking caused by data mining apps and multiple BHO partnerships. I trust no merchant who has multiple network programs with a common shopping cart. I trust no merchant who has any BHO relationships as they do seek dubious ways to offset the automatic double dipping penalities.

How can I trust a network who refuses to fire up their merchants to an high conversion application like GoldenCan. A simple scripted feed application delivering network coded links that Linkshare says can't be certified across the board for tracking issues. If GC doesn't track ...then nothing effeciently tracks from LS coded links on a merchant by merchant basis. Take Overstock the #1 LS merchant. They have so many affiliate channels working off the LS tracking code their entire sales reporting function is done manually in steps. They have to filter out multiple affiliate cookies on each sale to determine who gets what! Then forward the report and pray it interfaces to Linksynergy. So many holes to the trust factor they refuse to come to ABW and face the music. NET result is the entire LS Trust issue is right back to year 2001.

I do not trust this is the performance of all the changes made to better focus shoppers before the click at my site. .... LS Report Totals: impressions 887,121 clicks=3,698 0.41% sales=7 11 (1) 0.22% $425.40 $29.52 This from the 2005 GoldenLink Award winners affiliate web site immediately after the presentation. That's 5% of the Linkshare commissions I earned in 2004 and 2003 from the same merchant pool. You thought I was vocal before ...wait until I unleash some tirades between now and Christmas Eve.
