Mosey on down to Webmaster World and check out the `My site has been First Now vanished from Google` thread - currently at 41 pages. As your graph shows, Google nuked a huge number of websites since ~22nd Sept. Let's hope they buy a clue before Christmas kicks in, eh?

This isn't new for Google. They go through these phases where filters are applied, and good sites get sucked into the pit of hell. Then they tweak them a bit, and the good sites come back. Somewhat.

In the meantime, a lot of black hat sites and other junk rise to the top and enjoy the benefits of top rankings, until Google realizes they've made a mistake and applies more filters (or adjusts current filters) to get rid of them. It happens over and over again.

When I check sites, I usually check a few keywords/phrases in areas out of my area of interest. These are non-competitive terms, so it removes the affiliate link equation, and most black hat tactics since there's little or no money involved. You can always tell when Google has flubbed something, because the good authority sites drop and the junk rises to the top. It's almost as if Google has to get them to the top to get rid of them...

As mentioned, I hope they get it together before the Holidays roll around.

I think you are right, Andy. This happened last year to me and came back about 3 months later, but when you depend on this for income, it can become scary!

geezer, where did the graph come from? I assume this is for ppc rather than organic search? Certainly reflects reality in my case.

I love it when I read that the search engines are spanking some because, most of the time I always see a rise when they do. No offense to anyone but . . . keep on posting~! =o)
