Just got this mail from CJ:
------------------------------------
Hello! I work in the Client Development Department at CJ. I'm working with Ubid in order to promote their program to publishers like yourself. I think that your site would be a great match. Ubid auctions a lot of computer related product.

Ubid is paying $5 per registered user.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks,

This is an honest solicitation to get you to partner with uBid. Client Development looked at your partnerships and site content and thinks that uBid would be a good partner for you. They are interested in helping you make more money. They are also interested in growing uBid's program.

Don't take offense, they targeted you with a suggestion that should help you earn more money.

This is a common occurance. CJ is constantly developing relationships within the network, looking to maximize revenue for all parties involved.

I just don't believe that he has really looked at the site. I think it was targeted because of its computer category, not because it was a good fit. He didnt mention the theme of the site in any way, or for instance how to best implement Ubid auctions on the site.
Actually the theme is graphics, not computers. But CJ don't have a category for me, so it's computers.

Also, the site in question has about 1% of all my traffic and is not very high on my priority list.

Still looks like spam to me. I don't answer spam mails by principle.

I got it also ... I see it as more of a way for Ubid to make the $XX.00 CPM on the X10 popunder for all the traffic we send them.

uBid doesn't get it anyway.

I asked them to allow CJ publishers to send traffic to any category, but they refused. You can only send traffic to the broad sections, not specific categories.

Doh.

Needless to say, they don't get any traffic from ME.

Ubid used to be at Linkshare and did pay their affiliates even after closing down the program there...big plus! Shame they don't have the same commission structure on sales of electronics and computers added to the referral fee.

Oops, just posted in the merchant fraud forum about this.

I also got the email.

Yeah, I have a webmaster site, so what?

Todd, how about you guys contact me with some merchants who pay 20% on highly sought items with a high ticket price that are hardly marketed by any other merchant on line and are hard to find in the stores?
That I could appreciate.

Just when my cupboard was out of spam.
This just tastes like spam.

I have to say, I have never gotten one of these "Client Development" spams that highlighted a merchant worth working with.

There's always a clinker somewhere. Either they think I'm Planters and want to send me Peanuts for commissions (I got one a while back that touted something like a 3% commission), or the EPC is microscopic, or the cookies are tiny, etc.

I'm not categorically opposed to emails but the quality of the Client Development highlighted merchants so far has left something to be desired.

This is not to be confused with the more generic Merchant Promotional Email-type spams, some of which have had rather good prospects IMO

I will say that the Mystery Signup that happened is much more disturbing. It's sooo DESPERATE!

Avon Cosmetics tries that trick in Norway. Completely different from the Avon affiliate model in the US.

It doesn't matter how many visitors I can send. I can easily spin 100.000 banners for female visitors in a day. It doesn't help.

I have to pay a hefty monthly fee to sell their products. Although the commission rate is good, the risk is too high, and I refuse to pay to send them potential customers. I've tried to talk some sense into them, but they refuse to listen.

Avon will stay off my sites until they change their policy.
