    Problems with AE Install
    I recently sold one of my AE sites. The new owner has purchased the AE script, has been assigned a key, and is trying to get it running...and I'm trying to help.

    I was doing fine thru the stage of:

    http://www.mydomain.com/cgi-bin/ae.pl

    The books list comes up as it should.

    But then, I want to turn on the virtual directory. I edit the .ini file with /amazon and upload it (and the .htaccess is in the root directory of the site) and I paste in a URL which works fine on my other sites, like:

    http://onegreatgift.com/amazon/type_browse/mode_509312/

    and it returns a 404 error:

    Not Found
    The requested URL /amazon/type_browse/mode_509312/ was not found on this server.

    Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

    What the heck am I missing? Thanks!

    The url you gave leads to a 404 page not found. If it was working before and isn't now, are you sure it isn't an Amazon problem?

    The URL I included works on my other AE sites (with the proper domain name, of course...), so no...I don't believe it was an Amazon problem. I pasted it into the URL field on two other sites before trying it on One Great Gift.

    Thanks for trying, though. This is weird. While it's been some time ago, I built 6 of these sites and didnt run into a lot of problems. This one has me stymied, though.

    Does that server support mod_rewrite? (Windows servers don't suport mod_rewrite). What's in your .htaccess file? Is the .htaccess file in the root directory of your website?

    David,

    That was one of my questions, as well (It's not my site anymore, I'm just helping...so I didn't acquire the hosting account). However, here are the specs:

    Operating system: Linux
    Perl version: 5.8.5
    PHP version: 4.3.11/w Zend
    MySQL version: 4.0.25-standard

    And, yes...the .htaccess file is in the root directory.

    And here are the contents of that file:

    RewriteBase /
    RewriteRule ^(amazon)$ $1/ [R]
    RewriteRule ^(amazon)/(.*)(\.[a-z]+)$ cgi-bin/ae.pl?virtual=$2&virtual.dir=$1 [L]
    RewriteRule ^(amazon)/(.*)$ cgi-bin/ae.pl?virtual=$2&virtual.dir=$1 [L]

    If this isn't diagnosable from a distance, do you provide troubleshooting for a fee...or is there anyone skilled who does? I really want to make sure I get this working for the new owner before I step away. I'm guessing it's something very simple...but I'm just not getting it.

    thx,

    and here's a thought
    It seems that there was a custom .htaccess file already in place for the domain. It reads like this:

    # -FrontPage-

    IndexIgnore .htaccess */.??* *~ *# */HEADER* */README* */_vti*

    <Limit GET POST>
    order deny,allow
    deny from all
    allow from all
    </Limit>
    <Limit PUT DELETE>
    order deny,allow
    deny from all
    </Limit>
    AuthName www.onegreatgift.com
    AuthUserFile /home/onegreat/public_html/_vti_pvt/service.pwd
    AuthGroupFile /home/onegreat/public_html/_vti_pvt/service.grp

    I assume I need to keep these contents (the hosting account instructions seem to indicate that that's the case)...so could this be the problem? If so, how do I append this file to enable mod_rewrite?

    thx,

    Yes, keep that original htaccess content. Paste in the rewrite lines just below it and save your work.

    Still didn't help
    Thanks Dollar. I did as you suggested.

    Here is the new .htaccess file:

    # -FrontPage-

    IndexIgnore .htaccess */.??* *~ *# */HEADER* */README* */_vti*

    <Limit GET POST>
    order deny,allow
    deny from all
    allow from all
    </Limit>
    <Limit PUT DELETE>
    order deny,allow
    deny from all
    </Limit>
    AuthName www.onegreatgift.com
    AuthUserFile /home/onegreat/public_html/_vti_pvt/service.pwd
    AuthGroupFile /home/onegreat/public_html/_vti_pvt/service.grp
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteRule ^(amazon)$ $1/ [R]
    RewriteRule ^(amazon)/(.*)(\.[a-z]+)$ cgi-bin/ae.pl?virtual=$2&virtual.dir=$1 [L]
    RewriteRule ^(amazon)/(.*)$ cgi-bin/ae.pl?virtual=$2&virtual.dir=$1 [L]

    But...testing with this URL still produces a 404 error:

    http://onegreatgift.com/amazon/type_browse/mode_172471

    Is anyone available for hire to help with this? I just want to get it resolved.

    thx,

    Just before this line:

    RewriteBase /

    add this line:

    RewriteEngine on

    This turns on mod_rewrite otherwise all the Rewrite* lines are ignored.

    Who Was That Masked Man?
    Once again, David...the perfect answer.

    It works perfectly now. I just need to get the template configured and the new owner is good to go.

    Thanks so much for your help!
