    Unhappy Please Advise...
Here is a situation I am facing:

A company has both an internal program and one on Share-A-Sale. The SaS one pays better so I use that one. They convert okay for me so I am happy. In fact, they are starting to do some cool things so I am thinking of pushing them more.

Then I notice that their SaS account is empty. Lazy me, I hadn't checked lately and its been empty for NINE days. After calls, emails, etc. fail, I finally locate an AIM screen name for the person I last spoke to there. He (she? it's one of those ambiguous names) and I talk and I am assured that there is just some reevaluation of SaS going on and it will be cleared up today. Sounds good.

Now, while I was trying to reach this person, I came across their affiliate support forum, which I had never felt the need to visit, and I posted my question about why SaS account was empty. No official response, but it did get some replies to the effect that they are currently paying their inhouse affiliates only 36% of their normal commission because of a big promotion (one of the things that had me thinking of pushing them more). I was more than a little surprised to hear that a promotion equalled a pay cut for their affiliates. So, back to my contact...

I asked about it and was told that it was just for the promotion. So I asked when that started and I am told "a little over a week ago"... sounds like around 9 days ... meaning the same time they let their SaS account run dry. So, I ask the blunt question: "Are you folks trying to see how little you can pay us and still get us to promote you?" I get an "lol" in return at which point I explain that some of us do this for a living and take it quite seriously and I was NOT joking. I am told that the current promotion is cutting their margins so they are cutting their commissions during it. I ask if they turned off SaS because they couldn't do the same and I get "We're evaluating things at SaS. I don't have all of the information available at the moment."

    So...

Am I being paranoid here or does it really sound like they've decided to with their affiliates to see if they need us? Frankly, I am about THIS close to changing my page to read "While in the past we have recommended COMPANY X, recent decisions by their management team make it impossible for us to do so in good conscience at this time."

Any advise from the more sagacious members?

    -John.
There's a reason army's wear uniforms even though it makes them easier to spot. Sometimes that's what you want. Uniforms suggest organization, power, and numbers. These, in turn, inspire fear. And, as any good operative knows, there is no more effective weapon than fear.

It's a business, treat it like one!
If they are trying to cheat you, why promote them?

Absolutely. I feel like they are cheating me, but I wanted to get a second opinion on the situation so I do not simply react emotionally.

Actually, as of a couple minutes ago, I have changed all my links to point to a page that reads:

In the past we have recommended Site5 highly. Recent management decisions, however, have made it such that we cannot in good conscience recommend then for even the most basic hosting needs. Our recommended lists are being revised and will be updated on the site shortly.
Oh yeah, the company in question is Site5 Hosting. And I feel that my above statement is completely honest. My conscience requires that I provide for my family, so I cannot recommend them in good conscience. Besides, a company that with their affiliates today to save a few bucks will do the same to their customers tomorrow.

If I hear anything else from them that changes my understanding of the situation I will let people here know. In the meantime, as an affiliate, I would steer very clear of Site5. Too bad; they converted well and were a decent host.

You know what you need to do.

When a merchant screws you - you remove their links on your site and move on to another merchant.

Once screwed by a merchant - always screwed by that merchant.

Merchants on SAS that go offline need to be dumped. An offline merchant is like poison for your site - in a way it's worse than if your server goes down.
