Affiliate Opinion of Auto Banner Updates
We're wondering what affiliates think about existing banners automatically getting updated with fresh banners of the same size? We'd specifically use it as a tool to keep promotional offers and merchant details up-to-date.

    We've seen two sides emerge...

Pros: Content gets updated automatically, affiliates don't have to login and grab the new banner code.

Cons: Affiliates might have a specific reason to want the original banner, and be unhappy to have a banners changed on their web properties without notice.

    What do you think?

    Thanks,
    Jennifer

I think auto updating banners are a good idea for promotional & seasonal items/traffic.

If an affiliate wants a static banner that never changes, have one available but for affiliates who want the latest offers on their sites, an auto updating banner has to be a good thing.

Some affiliates who do use banners will resize them for "various reasons".

I'd offer both an auto & static option.

at any rate, the auto-updating banners MUST stay in the same theme unless specified otherwise. radical changes can wreck site design and confuse visitors.

    Hi Jennifer,

I set up "Auto Links" in our program where I update the banners periodically. I received good review and it's really a convenience to many affiliates. The solution to your "cons" and (what is in place in our program is), to seperate the auto banners from the rest of creatives. So, affiliates will know, when placing the banners, whether they are auto banners or will stay as put, so they can choose whichever they prefer. In Linkshare, it's easy to categorize links, but I am not sure about the other platforms.

I agree Herb on the keeping the same theme when updating banners. Another thing to consider is the fuction of the banner. If it's static it should remain static, if it's animated it should stay animated.

Can't add anything to what's already been said, other than to reinforce:

    - Static banners are always static, animated always animated
    - No big changes to colors used, theme, etc.
    - Make sure the banner is clearly identified as an auto update banner
    - Don't convert another banner that wasn't auto updated to auto update without prior notice to affiliates

It's the only type of banner i use on my site. Set it and forget it, always has the latest deals, specials or whatever, good for everybody. Gives me time to work on all the other stuff.

Thanks everyone! You're all in my camp...

We'll definitely categorize banners by auto and static, and make sure the auto-updating creatives stay true to theme.

Thanks again for the feedback from the frontlines!

I use banners to make static text links in some cases. It would be good if you can let the affiliate know when the banner has been updated. (If the banner is a promotion or coupon)

Simple answer = offer both. Have your regular stock of generic banners and then the auto updating specific offers banners, but be up front about it. There's one merchant I have in mind that has about 90% expired banners in their "selection"
