Preparing the datafeed - noob question

I'm in the process of learning WM and I found a problem that might be quite elementary to solve, but I don't know where to look to have it addressed.
When building a multi-tier site using categories (or subcategories), I want the index page to contain a list of links for each unique subcategory; currently I can only produce a large page that has reproduces names of subcategories for each individual product there is.
In other words, if I had my store had a cleaning supply category with buckets, soap, and mops, it would show up:
Right now the only way I can fix it is by deleting a lot of the datafeed so all but one product within a unique category is gone. This seems like it would be hard to do, especially if updating every day. So, is there a way to easily overcome this problem? If not, what do other people do? Is there some macro I can use to fix this quickly?
