Should GOOGLE Charge a subscription Fee?
I read an article on this exact question and the response was mixed. I'm curious to know what you think:

Would you pay $5.00 a month to use GOOGLE services?

Only if I was a business wanting to know how I was doing with them. As a regular Joe just wanting to look something, there are plenty of other search engines out there.

No, if there was a free search engine that was about as good as Google (and there are many IMHO), I wouldn't pay. Plus, as an advertiser, I would be very upset that they would be greatly reducing the number of searchers by charging a fee. I don't think it'll ever happen.

Sounds like the Google Gods are getting a little out of control. Pay for search? EGADS ...

No, I wouldn't btw, unless what was already said above. :-)

The average surfer doesn't want to pay for anything anyway unless they are specifically looking to BUY online. They've been spoiled by all the free content and information already. Getting Internet consumers to pay for infomation they're used to getting free is next to impossible.

I think google should charge for their service, and you know why: because nobody would use them anymore then, and I would have a chance to get more visitors to my sites again.
Google sucks, so yeah, they should start charging for their services!!!

    H*LL NO!

But I'd LOVE to see them try it. It'd drive more traffic towards SEs who actually know whose sites belong near or at the top

Seeing as how Google is so desperate for money, I think they should put lots of popups on their sites. Worked for AltaVista. <elg>

That's actually not a bad idea. Amazon essentially pays people to use their search engine (A9.com) by giving a small discount to Amazon for people who use A9 regularly.

And didn't Gates recently say that he thinks Google makes about $50 per user already?

I think waaay back when Google started up there was some speculation that it would be a subscription service. But of course, all those ads are the real revenue generator - everything has ads, and the ads are usually highly relevant.

I can't imagine that Google would muck around with their business model unless they have some sort of death wish.

I was just trying to spark a conversation. I heard some shockingly mix reviews and it peeked my curiousity about the topic. I wanted to get the opinions from the best sources of people on the net.

That's why we need to have decent competition from Yahoo and others. Otherwise we will end up, God forbid, with another Microsoft...

Google will say 'we want you to pay us money,'...and we will say 'OK, where do we send it?'
