    And here comes Google Analytics
Google is offering Urchin website analysis tool for free now.

    http://www.google.com/analytics/

Anybody who runs AdSense is already sharing all of this information with Google...

I think it's pretty neat that Google's offering such a service for free. I believe it cost thousands of dollars just to use Urchin before.

I would not recommend running adsense on the important stuff.

But that is just my opinion.

    Question
apparently they are in maintenance mode right now.

has anyone bought into this? I'm curious if they issue code per-page, per-site, or per-account . . .

OK, got it . . . same code per page of a domain, separate code for another domain and possible to break up a domain into sections for separate tracking.

and the code goes into the head, so I guess includes won't work.

as I'm going to experiment a little with ppc this coming year I might as well have this tool running ahead of time.

I think that is more on the lines of a guideline. Javascript will run regardless of it is in the head or the body. It would be a huge handicap if couldn't be run in includes.

Also, for the people who say they don't want to share that information with Google. Are you running Adsense? The way I see it, if they know what the majority of my traffic is they will have a better understanding of what ads to serve. This would result in a higher CTR, and higher earnings. What information exactly are you weary of them getting their hands on?

I would love to use this. As far as sharing data with Google, I don't mind.
I use Gmail, Toolbar, AdSense, AdWords etc. They know my name, address, phone #'s, bank account #, credit card #, ssn #, how I behave - or not behave - when I visit sites etc. And all the content on my sites are spidered by Google.

So there is nothing NEW they will learn about me or my sites with these tool.

Urchin has been very useful for us. You need to make sure that you get the your different data streams connect to each other. Campaign Tracking has been especially useful.

How on Earth did you ever find the time to come up with enough stuff to generate that many PVs?! Even with "great c*ntent" and all that...Geeezz! I've got one c*ntent site with ~700 pages of info and it gets all of 5k PVs/day. Recipes aren't techie or cool, but wtf, everyone likes to eat don't they?!

I just signed up it took forever as I am sure they are being loaded down. You have to add the tracking code to your main page then verify it and then they give you a tracking code for EACH Page you want to track.

I used my Vinny Site since that was the smallest site I have. Its simple almost looks like adsense code. ( I think I know what that looks like ) Simple copy and paste.

ROFL they might as well just say, "no sites over 10 pages," then!

    What's in it for Google?

I mean - we all know that free downloads tend to come with a parasiteware payload. So, Google must have some money-making plan going on here. Read the T&Cs VERY carefully to see what they are going to do with that data.
