Did they possibly just click on your name and send an email via this forum? Anyone could do that - no need for your name to be sold.
Or, they could have clicked on your name, visited your homepage, and found contact info from there.
In either case, they might consider that as "scouting you from ABW" with no need for anyone to sell a list. This World is Not My Home

Nope. They sent a flat out email to me. Not through the ABW email system. Looks like he sent it to others too.
Haiko, is it good to say who it was? Your call.

If you include a link to your sites in your signature, you have to expect some people to contact you.

Michael, the email address and site he sent to is not and has never been on ABW. He spammed and used H as a reference. I told Haiko how I think this person got my information. I'm guessing that it's like I'm on some sort of List or something.
Sorry Billy. When I listed that site, it was a blog on stupid things. When we moved, I took it down and never fixed it back up. I have a feeling that it will make a comeback in the near future. (Know any good blogging software?)

Just out of curiousity i did a www.whois.sc search on your site Chris i.e. www.totalstupidity.com and i got all your details, plus an email address...The best way to avoid being spammed on this board is to not list your site(s). This is a sad state of affairs, but it's difficult to be anonymous on the web these days...
I suspect whoever spammed you probably did the same thing...Along with other members here...Only takes a few seconds...
November 16th, 2005, 01:30 AM #16
I'd also avoid putting your contact details in Alexa if you don't want to be spammed...Your recycled talent website also contains all your contact details...

You say to Chris that "The best way to avoid being spammed on this board is to not list your site(s)." but, you have your site listed here!
Are you getting spammed too?
The reason I ask is because once in a while, I too get some spam emails that look like they come from here but, I don't have any of my links here yet.

It's difficult...These sites do not belong to me by the way, I manage their affiliate programs on behalf of AMWSO.
My work email addresses do get spammed to death by both merchants and AM's, but there is nothing i can really do about this easily as i need to have my email details out there so people can reach me should they want to...(My email addresses are all over the net). It's difficult to avoid spam these days, all it takes is one mistake i.e. someone swiping your website details/email address and thats it...Game over...And if you get your email address on a spammer's lists...Ouch...

I'm sure you probably know this already Sal, but you can send messages by email through ABW. I've never done it myself, but if you check out your profile (or someone elses) often that option if is enabled...

Also, since the day that I decided to use my email on the ABW profile feature, I have not received any spam from ABW.
While I in deed have received some spam to the email address that I only use for ABW, so far I can guarantee that those spam emails have nothing to do with the way that Haiko runs that members email script.
Haiko's ABW emails come from (where they come) and spam from those that send me spam with an ABW look a like address go to my IP note book, so I know the difference of who is who.
And again, thanks for Posting my thing on the open! That was a nice move on your part.

Interesting thought. I wonder if ABW memebers are somehow secured from it happening so.
[One Word Answer - YES]
..... Saying this, because, just like Mr. Sal, I have never received any spam (just valuable suggestions, important questions, etc, etc) via that ABW feature in the profile. Wonder what Haiko has to say about this.

Sorry Sal i wasn't thinking when i did that...Please forgive me...
In no way am i casting doubt on how Haiko runs this forum...He does an outstanding job, and the entire affiliate marketing community would be significantly worse off if this board wasn't around...I was just thinking out loud, that's all...It's scary what determined people with some knowledge can do armed with a computer and a telephone line...

The email that I received, did not come from the ABW email system. I know how that system works as I have a forum using vBulletin too. As for my site information listed here, sadly I have a forum here so having my site name/url in my signature is kinda needed. Also, along that same suggestion, did you know that you are not supposed to have fake information in your Whois listings anymore? They can take your domain away from you if you do. Shocking huh.
I still think that this person found my information from somewhere else and that he was probably told to say that he got my info from ABW. It's like I'm on some big List of successfull affiliates. Draw your own conclusions on that one.

I think the point Cditty is trying to make here is that, regardless of where they got his email address, they are using Hiako as the reference for the email which is totally wrong.
