November 21st, 2005, 12:43 PM #1Gift guides, does anyone use them?
Almost all merchants sites have one of these of some description, so I can find what I can give uncle Joe and spend no more than $25 knowing that he's a sedenatry Anabaptist with a penchant for the louche.
BUT - does anyone ever use them? Is it worth my while having one of my own or linking to merchants who do? Some of them are very sophisticated, I tend to look through them and then ignore them completely - but then I'm pretty sure the way I shop is not the norm.

JUDGING BY THE FACTS: According to Overture, "gift idea" is the MOST searched phrase (from those including the word "gift"). Monthly search volume: 1,949,807 (which is 3 times more than just a plain search for the word "gift"; search volume: 646,015). Sounds like they are looking for ideas.

Sounds like a great idea for a site.
Picture something like 20 questions (see http://www.20q.net/ and I bet you can't pick something that the AI can't guess!). Except, it'll ask questions about the recipient and suggest gifts. If AI can guess virtually any item you can think of, surely it can come up with some good gift ideas, too.
Also, imagine the free publicity you would get with a site like this!
Now, how to program it...

I've had great success with them for years. There is always someone on your list that's hard to buy for. During holidays these are my top entry pages. Father's day is the most popular idea guide.~Ernie
