    I'm off to Space Camp!
    I'm off to Space Camp!

Well, kind of. As mentioned in an earlier thread, I'm taking a little road trip with my mom while I move her up here to Nebraska from Georgia. I've been plotting a route now for a couple of weeks trying to give her a trip she will long remember (poor soul has been working every day for months to get to this point after my dad passed away).

First interesting stop will be Space Camp, home of tue US Space and Rocket Center. We will then traverse Tennessee over to Memphis to see Graceland (her request) and find some of that fine BBQ everyone has been telling me about. Heading over to Western Arkansas I have plans to visit two VW graveyards (I restore them as a hobby). What son takes his 73 year old mother to VW junkards? Oh, my!

Rather than the usual Motel 8 or Holiday Inn's, I've found some really great lodges and inns at the state parks in Alabama, Tennessee and Arkansas. Actually less expensive than hotels because of the off season and weekday rates.

Along the way we hope to see some interesting sites I found on RoadsideAmerica website. A 20 foot rooster made of bumpers should prove interesting. Oh, look, the worlds largest office chair is in Alabama.

Watching PBS last night I see the home of WalMart is on our way in Arkansas. Can't miss that.

And Branson, Missourri is right on our path.

Mom says we have to stop at every casino too.

Boy, how am I going to pack all this in???

I'll give you all a report when I get back. Heading out Saturday and should be back by Friday.

Yeesh, that's a lot of activities!

You need to start working on convincing her that parking your butts in a nice FL motel and getting room service is the perfect vacation.

(I hope you got seperate rooms. Mothers snore loud! I wouldn't even try to share a room with mine...it's seperate rooms all the way--well worth the investment!)

Just found another stop (actually my mom's idea) and it just so happens to be on my route: http://www.unclaimedbaggage.com/tourthestore.html It is the Unclaimed Airline Baggage Center.

    This is better than ebay!!!

Good thing I'm only driving 180 miles that day.

The Unclaimed Airline Baggage Center, Ron???

Until today, my benchmark was Loxly, who flies to Vegas to take pictures of rocks!

Have fun - and if you find my brown luggage with the initials BK - lemme know

You HAVE to go to the unclaimed baggage center. They just did a story on it on cbs sunday show er something.

The airlines run such a scam. That place is filled to the rooftops with treasures!!!

Let us know how you scored there. That place is prolly better than a casino ! lol !!

Your mom is a lucky lady. I wish I had the resources to be closer to mine.

Yes, I'm heading straight to electronics....I could use a newer laptop.

And if I find any pretty red rocks....

...I'll take some pictures for Loxy.

But the real treasure for me is this junkyard in the backwoods of the Arkansas Ozarks: http://www.wayoutsalvage.com/ I can find laptops anywhere, but finding a rear bumper or rocker panels for my 1969 VW Fastback, now that is a REAL find. ;-)

I'm back! Wow, what a week.

Actually did most of what I planned, spent two nights at beautiful campgrounds with modern inns. Ate wonderful meals and surely gained a few pounds. Visited the National Baggage Claim center in Alabama and left with only $7.00 worth of stuff (someone beat me to the one laptop they had left). My mom spent $90 and bought a cart full of winter clothes and coats. It was fun place to look around.

Next stop was the US Space and Rocket Museum in Huntsville. Very entertaining, but so much information to read. You really need most of a day to do that place right.

Yep, even found my way up the back woods gravel road to the VW salvage place (in the dark) to get my hard to find front fender for my 69 VW fastback.

Worst part of the trip was driving through Kansas City on the interstate after a significant snow fall. Nearly had an accident that I'm sure would have been fatal. Three cars stuck in front of me on a blind curve on the left lane and a semi behind me and beside me. Not sure how I made it out without a scratch, but it was close.

Missed you all. Glad to be back and ready to get back to work.

    Welcome back, Ron!

Sounds like you had a good trip, except for the near-miss on the road. Yikes ... makes you glad to be alive and in one piece, huh?

Hope Mom had as good a time as you did. :-)

    Hi Neil,

Yes, it was huge. And very well organized. And good variety. For example, there were two whole racks of just men's black leather jackets, all in rows by size.

I spent most of my time in the electronics and sporting goods area but did not find much that I needed. There were some great deals to be sure, but I just did not find anything that said "Buy Me!".

Sad news about the pics. I dropped my Treo 600 that I had been using to take pictures and it stopped working. Finally got it working when I plugged it into AC power, but it reset to factory settings and everything was gone. I had some great pictures, too.
