Can WM be used without detail pages?
What I'd like to do is have product pages with maybe 6-8 products displayed, with photos, custom descriptions (sometimes) and affiliate link to each product.

Can this be done without using individual detail pages? And if so, can it be done 2/3 tier, or would an index page have to be individually done for each product type?

I think I asked this wrong. I want detail pages, but instead of one product on each detail page, I'd like several listed on each detail page (like 4 or 6 each).

Still haven't found out, still not using the program.

There must be a way to put something like 4 or 6 products with photos and merchant links on a page instead of just one product per detail page. Nobody knows how?

Run once to generate an index page and set to create and name detail pages the way you want them named (brands, category, whatever).

Run again with just index pages, set to be named in the manner that the detail pages were named in the first run. This second run will overwrite the detail pages from the first run. The purpose of the first run was to generate a working index page with links to the appropriate file names. Each of these "index" pages from the second run will actually be a "detail" page in relation to the main index page, fitting the scheme that you have described.

As for limiting the number of items per page, somebody else may have an answer for that.

You should be able to finagle 2/3 tier setup doing this. The key is for the final run to be generated as if each brand/category/whatever is run as index pages in WM.

There's no requirement that you generate detail pages. If you only want index pages just leave the Detail Pages checkbox turned off and you'll be fine.

To include info for multiple products on an index page just put the HTML for a product between WM-Record tags, like this:

    [WM-Record]
    [WM-Field: ID]
    [WM-Field: Name]
    [WM-Field: Description]
    [/WM-Record]

See the WebMerge Help section on the WM-Record tag for details on its use.

    Hi Richard:

The problem I run into is generating an index page of categories once I've created these pages. Especially just one listing of a category.

The tutorials linked at the top of this page describe how to create category and sub-category pages.

Use the process I outlined above. The whole purpose of the two separate runs is to generate a working index page on the first run. The second run of index pages only will overwrite the detail pages from the first run.

When I try to create the first one I get this:

    http://shopping-to-go.com/jewelbasket

here is the code I have on the page:

    [WM-RECORD]
    [WM-IndexLabel: Field_013]
    [WM-FIELD: Field_013]
    [/WM-IndexLabel]
    [/WM-Record]

If you're referring to the lack of line breaks, all you need to do is add those to your template. In HTML, line breaks are commonly done with "<BR>" tags:

    [WM-RECORD]<br>
    [WM-IndexLabel: Field_013]<br>
    [WM-FIELD: Field_013]<br>
    [/WM-IndexLabel]<br>
    [/WM-Record]<br>

The example he shows was a different situation before you saw it; categories were displayed as text rather than as links because WM had not been set to run bogus detail pages on the first run, so there was nothing for links to be generated for.

We got it worked out in chat.

yep got everything working now. This can be very tricky for the new people tho so do not attempt this if you are brand new. Maybe tomorrow I'll post a more detailed explanation on how NoWires helped me to figure it out.

ok here is a litttle easier explanation for those new to Webmerge. This will take two runs of Webmerge, the furst run taking the longer of the two.

    Run 1:

    Source tab
    -------------------------
set order by to whatever field you want to display on the index page

    Index tab
    ----------------------------
set to make one index page and use something like index for the name so that it doesn't conflict with your other pages

    Details tab
    --------------------------------
set to name pages based on the field you are displaying on the index page (should be the same as sort by on the source tab)

You should now be ready to run tis run

    Run 2

    Source tab
    ----------------------------------------
    same as the first run

    Index tab
    ----------------------------------------
set to change when the field you've used for your index page changes.

    Details tab
    --------------------------------------

    not used

That's a very helpful description. Thanks

I am still having a problem though. When I do the second run I getting the error "No index file name found in field " and it gives the field name I have chosen to sort by. I'm thinking this is due to some of these fields being blank and presuming it just doesn't like a blank index ... which I can understand. But how can I get round this. I'm trying the same feed as mentioned in the earlier part of this thread and there doesn't seem to be a possible sort field that doesn't contain some blank entries. Do I need to edit the feed to put something in there? If so ... I am really not happy about having to change the feed before I can use it.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks, Sue.

    NoWire is right.

Also I cannot get rid of the loads of white space for some reason. Looks fine in the browser but if you view source tons of it between links LOL. This also makes the size of the page huge.

Lol ... I'm just swearing at the pages of whiteness at the moment.

Also ... is there any way to set the link to include my web site? I've tried doing exactly what was in the demo but it just forces the index field in as a seperate link. I'm currently manually editing the html to remove the blank lines and to add in my URL to the link.

    Thanks, Sue.

Include no white space where you do not want white space, and no white space will be replicated.

    Richard:

It must not like the location of the br

    [WM-RECORD]
    [WM-IndexLabel: Field_013]
    [WM-FIELD: Field_013]<br>[/WM-IndexLabel]

I have tried seperating each line in the index page with a br, a p and even setting it up as a part of a table and I still get pages of white space between one entry and the next.

Are there no carriage returns between tags? The examples shown above all include returns between the tags.....

    Richard,

I can send you an example of my template and the resulting html if you like. Just send me your email address to sue@mygloriousgifts.com and I'll forward them.

WedMerge is really useful but this is making the index page much larger and much more difficult to edit than it ought to be.

    Sue.
