Fruitcake is yummy! But only when it's homemade, and soaked in rum for at least 2 months to "age" it. And no icky green and red dyed cherries.

    HELL NO!

I'm not a big fan of those chunks of fruit that have been dyed day-glo colors and preserved in sugar. Bleccch.

Anyone ever hear of the Fruitcake Freedom Initiative? Now this is some nifty marketing ploy.
Just this year, the Cold Stone Creamery on Transit Road in Williamsville introduced a Fruitcake Freedom Initiative.

Any person who turns in a fruitcake in the month of December will be given a $5 discount off an ice cream cake. (To continue the gift of giving, sealed fruitcakes will be donated to the Food Bank.) "We hope (the initiative) encourages people to think about starting new traditions when it comes to holiday desserts," said Melissa Underwood, the chain's director of product development.

I saw something on TV recently about a town that has a fruitcake festival. One of the activities is a fruitcake throwing contest. One guy actually built a small trebuchet to launch his fruitcake.

I only ever once received a fruitcake as a gift. I kept the tin it was packed in but the fruitcake went straight into the garbage.

    Neil,
    fruitcake:
    #1. A whimsically eccentric person.
#2. A rich cake containing dried fruit and nuts and citrus peel and so on.

    I'm a proud #1 , and I like #2 .

I love all types of fruit cake! My favorite however is to bake it in January, soak with a good whiskey (or 151 rum) cover with cheese cloth and put it in a tin. Every 30 days, you open the tin and add more whiskey. After 12 months of soaking it's ready for Christmas.

Christmas day, you open the tin, pour more whiskey on it, light it to toast the nuts. Then eat. Each year that I have this I don't give a damn if my husband forgets to get me anything for Christmas--heck, I've got my FC to keep me happy!

My husband was a real fruitcake!

He sure made me laugh. Why else would I have married that dirty old man?

I really liked him! I liked him a whole lot.

    I loved him, too.

Ahhhh ... we women who marry men because they make us laugh are destined to ... what? Divorce? LOL - My "ex" still makes me laugh. Gotta love it. I wouldn't dream of marrying (or having a relationship with) a man who I couldn't laugh with, but one who is truly funny is usually very intelligent, too. Makes for a fine companion.

But a dirty old man? Mmmmmmm ... nah! Dirty-minded, young and nasty ... yes. LOL (Don't be flaming me you guys! ... you know who you are)

Don't mean for this fruitcake theme to end up a relationship thread, just had to commiserate with SSanf.
    Peace,

Actually - They made 1,000 fruit cakes in 1843.

Not a one has ever sold.

They just keep putting the 1,000 original ones that were made in 1843 on the shelves in some stores every year at Christmas hoping that maybe someone will finally buy one - but so far no one has ever bought one.

They can't even find maggots that will eat one.

For those of you who know what a carp fish is - The recipe for a fruit cake is kinda like the recipe for cooking carp.

    1. Put carp in big pan.

    2. Put in a piece of green oak wood that is about the same size as the carp.

    3. Add salt to taste and enough water to cover the wood and the carp.

    4. Boil the wood and carp over med heat for 4 hours.

    5. Remove the pot from the stove.

    6. Pour off liquid.

    7. Throw the carp away and eat the piece of wood - it will be better than the carp.

    Fruit Cake recipe.

    1. Make the fruit cake.

    2. Cover with whiskey and soak for 2 days.

    3. Remove cake from whiskey and cut a piece of the fruit cake to eat.

    4. After two or three bites of the cake throw cake into garbage.

    5. Try to not throw up.

    6. Drink all of the whiskey that you used to soak the cake in - to try to forget what you just tried to eat.

Hard question to answer! Being a confessed sugar addict, I'll go for it if it's the only sugar-laden item available. Most of the time, I'll go for the holiday cookies!

I only voted yes because "1000 times yes" wasn't available.

I love dried fruit of any description. Other cakes are calories for calories sake (a sort of confectionary masturbation), fruit cake is the real McCoy.

I've always liked fruitcake. If cake isn't totally super-sweet, like birthday cake with butter-cream frosting or even cheesecake, I'd just as soon have some good rye bread and not bother with cake at all.
