Why does a merchant extend transactions?

I think the main reason is to allow time for returns, although some may do it for other reasons.

Some merchants have strict payment structures if they are a big company and may need to give their accounting dept X number of days to make a payment.

Depends on the product type. Merchants the sell actual products extend txns so that they can still correct it in the event of a return/exchange. Lead/subscription merchants may have a TOS where the customer can cancel within X number of days and get a full refund thus invalidating the txn.Akiva Bergstrom | email@example.com | 718-871-8286
