Multiple If Then Help Needed

Need assistance if someone can tell me how to format the tag for a multiple if/then statement.
I want to apply numbers to certain content and then have the content displayed corresponding to the number.
(ie: if number 1 is in a certain field, display a certain text)(2, other text)
and so forth. Do I need a seperate if/then statement for each certain text. I think it used to be this way, but with the new support for multiple if/then situations, is this included.
Hope one of the Pros on here can help!
