FTC tells Congress that Can-Spam is working
FTC tells Congress that Can-Spam is working
    http://www.internetretailer.com/dailyNews.asp?id=17077

    What a joke!

Spam, phishing, spoofing, nigerian scams, stock pump and dumps and many other types of email fraud crapola is everywhere! And the FTC (not doing their job!) tells congress (computer illiterate cronies!) that all is well.

This is insulting! I'm writing my congress members!

2006 will be the year for more perp walks taking place within the affiliate world. The FTC and AG's need some fodder for their spin machines.

    That article omited a lot.

The FTC said that Spam is down. Which it is according to studies done by third parties.

The FTC said that they are not sure if the Can Spam act had any impact on that decrease and said it could be because ISPs are blocking more Spam.

But they did credit the DOJ for using the Can Spam act to bring Spammers to trial.

The FTC is also pushing for new additional laws that will allow them to track down international spammers - one of the prime reasons they say they can't stop it well enough. But in the meantime, I trip across spam operations all the time - right here in the US - involving consumer fraud, CAN-SPAM violators, false promises and more.

So it seems to me that the FTC is still not doing a very good job at all.

There's another article where they claim 60% of the spam is sent by zombie computers, remote controlled, which they can't track down. More blame game in my opinion. The international bad guys... people who don;t protect their computers.... the FTC can work with ISPs to identify a lot about where stuff is coming from - but they're using excuses to blame foreigners and everyday computer users.

There are major spam ops based here in the US and many are known, still nothing much gets done.

The FTC did admit that the gains made are likely because technology has gotten better at filtering... so what I hear is "whew, glad the ISPs are doing our job, cuz we sure can't do it. we need technology, new laws, new listening methods, and for computer users to stop posting their email addresses... meanwhile, Palm Beach is still the spam capitol of this hemisphere... lame.

OK if they believe it is working I believe I can sell each and every competent congress member a timeshare with beachfront property in Denver with a spectacular view of the Himalayas for five million dollars a year. Just tonight I got 3 emails to my personal account with a preapproved mortgage and 5 for viagra and other meds. That is stuff that got around my spam program and filters. I think I'll change my nick to "Major Preapproved Woody"!
