Actually yes, there have been a few threads on ABW about this and even some competitors. Thank God he got the $1MM, shows alot that he did, but now ... when I go to the site and try to click on some ads, I get ....

"These pixels are available (XXX,XXX)" and can't click on anything.

It, more than sucks with the new CNN coverage, I'd demand my $$ back.

It worked for him because he was the first with a novel idea (or a novel twist on an existing idea). It won't necessarily work with the followers (and in fact won't work with most of them). There are now thousands of similar sites, few of which will be anywhere near as successful.

Took a sec here too, but page loaded and links worked fine. Even had <titles> added to images so text would show as you hover over the images.

I think that it's a very creative and engaging page, not at all what I expected. Have to admit that I spent a few minutes checking out the way it was put together.

I have been reading about his filling up the page by years end and how people that have advertisments on his page have seen a major boost in traffic as well. I image their PR has gone up as too.

I wonder how much of this is due to the UK publisher who broke the story of "The Million Dollar Home Page" That title alone should have got some notice and the then a post a few links around the web pointing to that article and the Wham-O

His success is about 99% due to this publicity. Like it or not, success follows notoriety. If the teenage fellow that just returned from Iraq were to start a website, he would have thousands of visitors with little or no effort. Web income is about advertising. Advertising is about exposure. Notoriety is mass exposure.

Future copycat "million dollar" sites (there are already dozens if not hundreds) will generate no buzz and thus get little or no traffic.

    Then this begs the questions...
Was the publisher in on it?
And if so, what was his cut?

    50% /50%.........

You have to click the text "With mail in offer*"
just below the FREE Web Hosting text.

It takes you to the rebates page and does indeed offer 1 year free hosting. It's the second radio button. Offer ends Jan 2, 2006

Also he allowed you to give affiliate links to post with your paid pixel space, just like paid linkage on other sites.

I don't think the publisher would have to be "in on it". If it makes for good reading and newspaper sales, they would be happy to feature the story. It's an interesting read, that's all.

His Ebay auction is up to $6300.00 for the last 1000 pixels. But his auction doesn't end for 9 days. I wonder if his *15 minutes* will have ended by then...he may not have the traffic then that he has now.

With the final pixels on the auction block, I think the traffic to the site is at or nearing it's peak, but I have no doubt that he'll see incredible traffic for months and years to come. Plus, it creates a great jumping board for him to launch a new site. I have no doubt that he'll come up with some other innovative way to monetize his traffic, and that advertisers will jump at the opportunity.

As for the site claiming fraud, I don't see any fraud. Basically, he's complaining that the last 1000 pixels were set aside from near the beginning and are now being sold on eBay. There's nothing fraudulent about that.

Holy Cow Neil - you really did! I thought you were just joking! I hope you win the auction...maybe we should have a chat about the concept of sniping.

I wouldn't be surprised to see this auction go for $100,000 or more. Probably to a casino site. Probably to a casino site that already has an ad there. Probably to a casino site that already has an ad there and is known for winning auctions for unique things on eBay and getting a lot of publicity out of it.
