2005! - What can I say about the year 2005?
This is my 1999 post and I will make believe that it's the year 1999 in order to start this post. After this post, this thread might take a new direction, but for now.....

    Here it goes:

At 11:59 P.M.. on December 31st 1999, a lot of people on this planet had the Y2k issue on their mind, (me included, (even if they don't want to admitted then or, by now.) ) waiting to see what will happen on 2000.

So nothing really happens on Y2k! (at least nothing big happens worldwide to take notice at that time.)

While I don't believe 100% on any prophet, or prophecy, or old predictions, I will admit that I like to read about it, I like the mystery of the unknown, so I had read that maybe the Y2k was off by a year because of the way the actual calendar year, and the calendar year of those that predicted a Y2k event, are not on the same page.

    What happen on 2001?

Almost everyone on this planet knows what happen on 2001, there was a mayor event that in one way or another, changed our lives for ever, or at least until who knows when.

2002, 2003, 2004, 2005. ------------> For better or for worse, life goes on for many humans, but not for everyone.

On a personal note, I hate all the human lives lost on the first halve of this decade, (2005) due to man made destruction for political or religious views, the wars, and the wrath that mother nature decided to drop on earth up to now.

    But well, that's life!

I just hope that the second halve of this 2005 decade be a little bit better than the first halve for humanity, as far as man made disasters and mother nature surprises goes.

If anyone have to ask what all that have to do with affiliate marketing, this is my answer:

All that rant have NOTHING to do with affiliate marketing. (or maybe it does, it all depends on how you look at life.)

    But some times life sucks!

And I will not get into the details of my own personal loss on 2005.

    ------------------------------

Back on topic now! (Affiliate Marketing.)

What can I say about the year 2005?

For me, the entire 2005 can go to Hell in a hen basket!

I made a lot less money this year on AM than last year, I guess it was because I went more with what I read, than with what I normally believe and I usually don't believe on anything or anyone lately but, what can I say? (I like to read a lot)

Network wise, I have learned my lesson, not to believe everything I read, test every Network and see what's going on in there for myself.

Merchant wise, I have learned my lesson, never trust any particular Merchant just because you make some money at the beginning, they may screw you later.

Search engine wise, I got screw it too. (so it's time to learn a few new or old tricks.) btw, (F- G-)

Datafeed wise, (the thing that made me wind up on ABW) there are more than one way to skimp the cat:

    Datafeed Tools --------->

WebMerge - If you learn how to use it, you will make money!
GoldenCan - If you learn where to put the Java-Script, you will make money!
My new toy- ( PHP & MySQL) - That's why I have been missing from ABW lately, I have found a new toy!

    ------------------------------

    Disclaimer:

If you find any bad typo, wrong spelling, or bad grammar on this post, that's your problem, not mine. I was not born in England, so my English may not be too perfect, so deal with it.

2005 got off to an ok start,my take on the first half of the decade is that I am f--king glad it is OVER. I never looked at it in those terms Sal, and I like the attitude that we are starting the second half of a decade. Starting in June, my life started to change for the better, still had some bumps and blips, but then... I ran away from home for what was supposed to be a week in September to deal with personal issues, the week stretched out a bit and spanned a wider distance than it was supposed to.... then in October I did something totally impulsive and then in November I went after something I really wanted (I haven't trusted myself to really want anything for a few years now) and now I am riding a wave of all good things.

I am totally looking forward to the second half of the first decade of the new millinium.

It was in interesting year. Affiliate sales had their ups and downs.

But the worst part was that I lost my dad from cancer. And that really hit home this Christmas and holiday season.

I can already say 2006 will be my best year every. I'm phyched, I'm ready, I'm anxious to see what a dedicated effort can do this year.

2005 was my worst year ever for AM. If I had to depend on my AM earnings to eat I'd probably have starved. Fortunately I didn't spend everything I made in '02, '03, and '04.

Why did I do so badly? In part the internet has changed and I didn't change with it. In part I got lazy and didn't work as hard as I used to. In fact there were months when I didn't do a thing. Vacation.

There are maybe three times as many potential customer dollars out there, but there are 500 times as many websites competing for them. (Made up numbers)

The law of supply and demand assures that if there's a way to make good money in your jammies more people will join in and compete until it doesn't work well anymore. So I'm off to other things I can do in my jammies.

There are 5 dogs in my house right now that are visiting while their parents are on vacation. I'm amazed at how much people are willing to pay to have their pets loved. And I'm in my jammies. And I like dogs.

2005 is not going to be my best year for AM but for the first time in the last 4 years, I'm going to make more than the year before.
1999 was my best year. I've still to understand I can't make more than this year but anyway who need to make as much.
I'm sure I've been one of the first to suffer from competition. I didn't change much, so I feel like people are getting tired of sites like comparison shopping or sites lying to them by thinking they're going to save a lot of money and they are coming back to some old values. Just the good stuff in stock at the right price.
I'm getting ready to do even better in 2006.

This is my new toy also. Big learning curve for me but I believe will be well worth the effort.

2005 was only my 2nd year at affiliate marketing. I did much better in 2004 because Google was dishing out free traffic to anybody with a website, but things sure have changed there. While sales were mostly okay in 2005 I've been able to catch up with the current technology. My proudest accomplishment for 2005 was building a price comparison engine. While it's only a toned down version of Pricegrabber at the moment, I've got big plans to innovate. I was also able to create a MySpace system that allows friends to network, blog and upload photos. These were pie in the sky goals coming into 2005 so I'm excited for what I've accomplished. Now 2006 will be all about innovation and increased audiences. I'm really excited for the years to come!

I agree with the other who already posted.... this year was mediocre at best... the bright spots for me were several niches I had been dabbling in finally clicked... on the other hand several that had been winners fell by the wayside...

    OH Progress...

the best way to describe 2005 for me is consistantcy...

    consistancy in income...
    consistancy in website improvement
    consistancy in life..

I too, am looking forward to 2006 and a much brighter future

    Sales sucked.
Parasites thrived and multiplied unfettered and unhindered by the scumbag Networks.
The big three Networks proved what money grabbing two faced lying assoles they are with no morals or ethics.

    Outlook for 2006

    More parasites.
More parasite promoting by the bent Networks.
The big three Networks will once again give all honest affiliates the shaft and will prove what lying thieving two faced scum sucking pond dwellers they are.
Less sales for the honest affiliates.
One day parasites and their ilk will be made illegal, I bet a few Lawyers will be pissed off when the day comes.

There's so much I could say about 2005 that it would be a really long post...so I won't say anything.

But I will pop Gman over the head with an optimistic stick. G, that's pretty ic even for you. We'll have none of that.

    2005 sucked the big one.

G initiated warfare with the seeming intention of eradicating all my sites from the Internet. Unfortunately they ran up against an immovable object--my hatred of empl*yment! So, my sites are still online. But it'll take a diving expedition to find their ranks on that casino-like engine.

I did start GoodBulbs, and for a 1st-season startup I'd say things went well. Despite the fact that the highest I ranked under "tulip bulbs" was 80 and now the site's disappeared utterly, affiliates and PPC made up for that. Although I'd love to compare it to a nice fat #1 Listing in the fall of 2006 (rather than during some season that nobody buys tulips).

    2006:

I think 2006 will be better, even though it's coming with the bad-tasting medicine of actually having to do eff*rt. But it seems that the Machine has finally ran out of that initial tank of gas I threw in there back in 2000.

I'm intending to get everything back cruising like it belongs. Like *I* think it belongs, not how G wishes It's time for their fluke streak to end...

Along with that, I'll be concentrating on getting GoodBulbs to grow bigger. Packing is only w*rk, when I'm packing someone else's stuff. So, customers can feel free to order like crazy, I won't be distressed at all to pack and ship several thousand boxes of my bulbs, to my customers!

Lots of advertising for everything. Call it anti-bad-algo insurance.

If I can get as long of a good run this time as the last time, I figure that won't be too shabby. Last time, it took several years for G to mangle my ranks, so it wasn't a bad ride. In fact it was a good enough ride that I'm flashing my tickets right now for another one!

What can you say about 2005? ................
So what can I say about that year ? - All I can say now is that I am glad it's gone for ever!

I live on the East Coast, but since I am on the USA, I decided to wait until the coast was clear on the West Coast, to make my 2000 post on 2006.

Since what they say is true, that "Knowledge Is Power", I am willing to bet that in this new year some ABW members (Me included), are going to break some sales records on 2006.

It's time to test, test, test for ourselves and then promote or dump, there's no more time to waste by blindfold trust, or by not trying anything new by ourselves, just because others says so.

You must remember this stupid example but, a real example:

People that eat meat may tell you that vegetable may be full of pesticide.
People that are vegetarian may tell you that meat can contain E. coli.

So as long as you can chose your own Tony Roma’s best ribs or your own Caesar Salad Recipe, you will never know what's good for you until you try them both for yourself.

    And........

As long as you just don't kill the animal, or you just don't grow the plants, you may not be doing anything illegal.

    And........

As long as you just don't steal someone else's food, you may not be doing anything immoral or unethical.

    So live and let live!

    Sal.

I thought that I was one of the few affiliates that tanked in 05 but after reading this post I don't feel so bad. I think Mr Sal and Gordon summed up how I feel about the upcoming year. The SE's suck and the only way you can place well is pay for it! I had a conversion with a young man from Yahoo who called me regarding their new ad program and that is exactly what he told me. This is the worst I have ever done with CJ too, not one sale in three months and I always got a small check over Christmas. I went direct with one merchant and had 2000 impressions,1200 clicks and no sales! This particular merchant has also failed to send me two checks in the past. Gordon, I think that part of the problem is that we live in Canada and that the above don't give a shit whether they pay us or not. Let's face it ,it's all about the bottom line $$$$$.
I would like to see the day when all affiliates shut down for one day. For those of you that are big players you might try this.
    Dear Merchant.
We have just introduced a monthly charge for all links text and banners. This charge will be deducted from the commissions that we earn from the sales we generate from your site.
As for 06 I am going to focus on merchants here in my hometown that have affiliate programs. It's cheaper to advertise and I can have a more personal contact with them.
    Happy New Year Everyone!

Major part of 2005 went by in understanding the affiliate business, gathering the requirements, designing and programing the tracking software and the tools. Now 2006 is when the real action begins. 2006 should be a mighty good year.

    cheers!

Aff marketing this year was not good.

Like Mrs. Donna, some of the fault was mine. I didn't work near as hard as in the past either.

The good thing - I confirmed that my original approach was what worked best for me. And that I am going to be down sizing to do what I want to do and how I want to do it. No more chasing the latest "flavor of the month" aff program.
