    Referer Spam from Poker Sites?
One of my aff sites is getting POUNDED by inbound traffic from a handful of poker sites. Which would be fine if my site had ANYTHING to do with gambling or poker...

Anyone else notice anything weird from casino sites?

I've burned a quarter of my alotted (although I can fix that) bandwith for the month already.

I also can't find any actual links to my site on any of the casino sites.

    What gives?

It's probably referrer log spamming. Have you checked to see if it's all from one IP address? If so, ban the IP address.

I've been getting that oo. Casino and drug sites - creeps.

What I don't understand is "referral log spamming" - what's the point and why?

Some site's referral log pages actually have PR assigned to them. Spammers try to get their URL's listed in these files to pump up inbound links to their sites.

Think of it as free advertising from the other site's POV. They get a link back to their site from your page. At the very least the webmaster (you) might pay them a visit (and get a cookie, click on an ad, buy a product etc.), the page itself might be publicly available and therefore might send them a bit of extra traffic from other people browsing your stats, and the stats page itself might yield a bit of Google PR back to their site.

All that from very little work on their part.

Unreal. I knew it was out there, but being the kind of guy I am, I never would have thought to do it.

    And I won't do it

the first time I noticed this kind of spam in my logs, it was the url of a site that sold software to webmasters with which to do this kind of spam.

Why doesn't that surprise me? Jeeese, it's sad, really how much effort some people put into trying to make money without making any effort.

I have a request into my host. Unfortunately, it's not my GOOD host (I have 2 reseller accounts). My GOOD host would've already gotten in his car and hit the perpertrators with a sock full of pennies.

My OTHER host probably built the websites spamming me

<sigh> I sent a very explanatory email to my host (Lypha) about what was happening to my site, and they responded back (2 days later) with an explanation how to change my spam email filter settings... I'm over 1000 visits a day from these jokers... Hundreds of different IP's though.
