Sometimes, I get e-mail that looks something like this sample *q³æ½T»{«á,±N¾¨§Ö7~14¤Ñ¤º What does it mean? I hope it isn't something nasty but I don't know what it is. There is a whole letter of these strange characters.

SSanf,

Most probably it is foreign language characters ... If you look at the source for the email I'll bet you'll find it is from a foreign country, if not it is ascii coding for a pic.

Yes, those are foreign language characters(most likely) and you don't have that language installed on your comp. If you are using Outlook, when you open the email it should ask you if you want to install that language.

SSanf,

You already had more than five years to learn that foreign language, so I hope that by now you know what the *q³æ½T»{«á,±N¾¨§Ö7~14¤Ñ¤º message is all about.

Can you read it now?

Nope, it is from Pluto. Don't know how their email landed in your inbox though. I was expecting that email some time back.

LOL He got ya Ssanf--Unix daemons are programs like Apache httpd (httpd = http daemon. In other words a web server), or MySQL!

I've got a whole bunch of them working in my FreeBSD server. They're tiny, red, wear sneakers and carry something that looks like a trident. If you want to see a picture, go to http://www.FreeBSD.org/

SSanf;
I think someone has already harvested your email addy and sold it to the oriental spammer mills. You will see them multiply like crazy. That happened to me and about 50% of all my email has that crap. If you try to bounce them, most have a phoney Yahoo address.

Crazyness!
Why do they want to spam me in a language I can neither read nor understand?

Why does anybody send spam? They buy a mailing lists from companies that claim that the you, along with everybody else on the list, would be interested in buying whatever they're selling. Of course, the only people making money are the ones selling the lists.

What does it mean?
I get a lot of emails with these strange characters. Maybe just a font problem - and maybe not! Just keep your spam and antivirus s/w up-to-date and activated - there might be somebody out there!!!
