Currently it's primarily used for browsing via cell phones.

Blast, their "gwt/n" link doesn't work for me. Maybe only portable devices can access now? It makes sense, and in many browsers one can turn off loaing images. But it goes without saying that this kind of behavior would not be cool if it were suddenly everyone's "default" behavior.

might be a nice seo tool as well... let's you see the text and text styling that a text-only browser would see - which is analogous to what search engine crawlers see...

The article contains a malformed link, here is the fixed one:
    http://www.google.com/gwt/n

I checked a few commerce sites. The results were very interesting, it seems that there are certain sites that do in fact get to show images. I checked some affiliate sites and most of the ads were stripped, but not all.

Aha, thanks. I didn't look closely enough at the URL.

It sure seems like it only wants to return pages from sites that it thinks will work in a mobile environment. Perhaps to the standard?

I know that many of my sites use CSS, and have loaded them in mobile phones and they work well. But this g**g thing didn't like any of them. But then, I don't adhere to any kind of mobile standard either.

if people (can) buy online by clicking their cellphone, then this is something that we have to consider/start working with. are the networks up to this?

I buy bucket loads of things online but will never via my cell phone, it's just not secure -> I have a telco background and know cell service.

Wow! That is a good link. I wonder how many people surf with their cell. It would be interesting to know the numbers. I would think that at this point, it would not be very high. The ones that do probably browse more than buy, but that may change in the future.
I’m going to keep in mind from a design aspect though. If they buy or not, the first impression counts. Anyone know any numbers on quantity of cell surfers and sales?

I don't think a focus on this sort of thing other then trying to sell ringtones or the like will bring much around at present. I have made purchases via my phone with a browser, but something snags on a large percentage of sites...I don't think the experience of others is much better. As a consequence my bet is people turn to traditional internet (desktop, laptop) to make any serious amounts of online purchases.

Like Haiko says, and I believe him, it's likely not the safest way either...but even with that aside I don't see this infrastructure really producing vast amounts of profitable traffic ...at present. In time I think it will produce, but on the same token I think it's a little too early to be a major focus.

I have been building all my sites so they could be viewed on a cell phone for almost a year. I noticed that I was getting hits from cell phones in my logs, give the people what they want!
