    Wine and Liquor related merchants
    Hello

I am developing a niche site for people to search and shop for alcohol online. I am looking to cover all beer wines and spirits and have the domain registered for the US, UK and Australia

Has anyone tried this before with any success or is the idea 'too niche' ?

Can anyone recommend any affiliate programs that might specialise in this market?

I have signed up to the majors and they have a few merchants but nothing compared to the total online liquors that are out there.

Any ideas / advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

    PJ

What's the deal with protection against selling alcohol to a minor over the Internet?
    Any updates in legislation?

From what I see it's the carrier's responsibility to check the ID upon delivery. They won't leave a bottle without the signature of an adult.

Which I understand is a real pain for the recepient. My sister-in-law told me how it took three stops by the carrier to get the package to her once. She was afraid they were going to send it back.

the deal is that the distribution industry loves to bring this up every chance they get. I don't see a problem as long as the shippers get an adult signature on delivery.

not too niche at all; I have two sites, one for world wines and one that is state-centric.

the only potential problem I see is that inventory is extremely volatile in some cases. one or two popular vintages can sell out quickly if a rating source touts them. you need to be able to keep up with inventory changes right away.

but here in the U.S. the shipping laws differ from state to state and are right now in a bit of a flux. even though the Supreme Court has made a positive decision on interstate shipping the individual states are finding ways to mess it up.

to answer your other question: one of the ABW members does quite well in this niche.

How does the minor get to pay for the alcohol online in the first place?

    Laws
It is my understanding that Wineries need a license to distribute in the specific state that they wish to ship merchandise. At least that is what one Vineyard rep told me.

States control alcohol distribution for the tax revenue.

although the thought of a minor doing that and ordering an expensive bottle and then waiting for a week or two for delivery and finding a way to get an adult signature . . .

when he could get one of his older buddies to go down to the corner store for a 6-pack of whatever . . .

idiotic! but that's the idea the Liquor Lobby is trying to plant in the media. They know it is about the only leg left to stand on and don't realize how shaky it is.

State drinking laws across the United States often specify 21 years of age as the legal age when purchasing alcohol.

I wasn't talking about some toddler buying your wine

I'm referring to the federal & interstate complications that can arise from the sale of alcohol to a 20 year old or to a teen-ager.

I have ordered wine from wine.com and in a wine club. Delivery takes a day. And the UPS driver never asked for my ID and has left my package with my 13 year old neice. The box however does say only leave with someone 21 years or older and if the person looks 35 or younger to ask for ID

We just had a brand of Whisky voted one of the world's best so I thought it might be a good idea to sell to the USA. The problem is getting it past USa customs as I am lead to believe that these beverages are not allowed to be shipped state side. I guess it will have to go thru the liquor stores in the USA. If anyone wants the name of the brand please email me, if your a Whisky lover!

I've seen plenty of wine sites, but can't recall seeing any with affiliate programs (or even without) that sell hard liquor.

I believe with delivery of cigarettes from online ordering it's only the first time that the delivery company has to verify the presence of the adult who ordered. Correct me if I'm wrong, that's what I recall.

If marrying a Woods is the luck of the draw
then I was unlucky and drew the short straw...

I am divorced from a fellow whose family name is Woods. If you are lucky, he is not related to you in any way...

Oh, and CJ have a new merchant who sells both wine and spirits - Chateauonline

Sorry Andy! Because I have seen you around this forum, I made the mistake of thinking I had seen you on this thread and would certainly have mentioned you otherwise! My apologies for the omission.
