Wikology - The Open Business Directory
Wikology.com an alternative to the ODP (dmoz.org) has been launched as a truley open version.

Wikology is a wiki-based business and website directory. Think of it as Wikipedia mashed up with the Chamber of Commerce. Here you can find business profiles, including revenue, employees, partnerships, vendors, and competitors for just about any company.

Fostered by the frustration and the inablity to get listings on the ODP. This is a volunteer effort, no editors and everyone is encouraged to post. Your comments are welcome, what do you think?

I took a quick look, but all the pages I saw just looked like keyword-stuffed pages. For instance, I just took the first category, first sub-category, etc. and drilled down to a detail page (Arts > Movies > Academy Awards > Acting > Actors and Actresses) and here's the useless detail that the page had:

Sites devoted to multiple actors and actresses known for Horror film performances.
Links to specific actors and actresses, and sites with general information devoted to several actors and actresses from the blaxploitation era.
Links to categories devoted to actors known for cult film roles.
Sites devoted to multiple actors and actresses from the silent film era, and links to categories for specific individuals.
Actors and actresses who were film stars under the Hollywood studio system from the first talkies to the end of the "Golden Era" in the late fifties.
Sites devoted to multiple actors and actresses who made notable Western film appearances.
This category is for @links and general information on actors and actresses in Hellenic (Greek) movies.
This category is for links to Open Directory Project categories to Japanese actors and actresses and for sites about multiple Japanese actors and actresses.
This category is for actors/actresses in Hong Kong movies, and Hong Kong actors/actresses.
This category is for sites and pages dedicated to Chinese actors and actresses.
Individual Italian actors and actresses and general information on the topic.
This category is for @links and general information on French actors and actresses.
This category is for actors and actresses who may span the specters of movies, television, theatre, and other acting mediums. Sites here may consist of fan tributes, official pages, resumes, informational pages, or other miscellaneous data. There are also @links leading to actors and actresses that are classified as multi-talented and are also widely associatied with other occupations in the Arts genre, besides acting.
This category is for sites of actors and actresses whose last name begins with the letter A.
This category is for sites of actors and actresses whose last name begins with the letter B.
This category is for sites of actors and actresses whose last name begins with the letter C.
This category is for sites of actors and actresses whose last name begins with the letter D.
This category is for sites of actors and actresses whose last name begins with the letter E.

Yup, the category pages suck, sorry
    Hello,

Yes, the category system in wikology sucks right now. It's our highest priority project and should be fixed in the next week or so.

    However check out:

http://www.wikology.com/index.php/Company:TechCrunch to see what a company entry looks like or :

    http://www.wikology.com/index.php/Pe...hael_Arrington
    to see in individuals entry.

Please add your sites and give unstinting feedback. The worst that will happen is that you get another link pointing to your site.

I wouldn't put it in the same category as a DMOZ. I think the only reason for the directory is to make money off the Adsense playing off searches on company names. I guess that's one way to make money with Adsense. I would maybe pay for your stats and not use the site meter anybody can check out. I remember you being the one with the idea of putting Adsense on the Backcountry sites, are you still working there?

    Dmoz?
Well, clearly it's not a DMOZ. DMOZ is directly connected to Google, age old, universally used, etc.

Wikology has 200 visitors a day and is brand spanking new.

But this is how sites begin. I have Sitemeter up there because this, like almost everything I do, is an experiment. I'm happy to have anyone checking it out to see how it's going. If you go to special pages on the wiki you will see the number of users. That's another, probably better, metric about how well the site is doing. Even so, Wikology has 10,000 pages in Google and there is no reason your site shouldn't be one of them, giving you instant, better PR...okay, not so much as Wikology has no PR, but it will. Links are going up every day.

My hope is that if community develops this can become an open source Hoover's. Yes, it has adsense...I hope it makes money. Currently there are three full time people working on it, so if it doesn't make money...well that would suck. I assume that everyone hanging out at Abestweb.com is in this to make money. I've been doing affiliate marketing since 1998 and it's not for any altruistic reason.

As to whether I'm at Backcountry still, umm, yes. I'm co-founder, so they're stuck with me. And yes, I did the adsense experiment. It was a really interesting A/B test that proved conclusively that it's not better to send visitors to adsense. As to that test, after day two, visitors with a PID or cookie attached were not shown adsense. We continually experiment at Backcountry in the hopes of getting better. Just wait 'til you see some of the stuff we're cooking up.

However the Wikology thing us not affiliated with Backcountry, it's just my hobby because I think DMOZ is horribly broken and a pretty bad model to begin with. It's what I work on in the evenings with a few other people. It's a long shot, but a very interesting longshot. I run a number of other sites as well, some interesting, some not so interesting.

Here's the article I wrote on my blog about the reasons for Wikology. Sorry for the book like post:

Wikology.com is now viewable by the public...although it's damn lonely over there right now. Feel free to click the sitemeter link at the bottom of every page if you want to see how it grows. Or click the recent changes link...that's probably a better barometer.

What is Wikology? Simply it's the bastard runt child of DMOZ and Wikipedia and the grandchild of Yahoo and Google. Or more accurately it's the banjo playing in-bred 1st cousin of any of those above. How it came into being is a story of simple frustration combined with the excitement of this Web 2.0 stuff.

Originally Yahoo was king, a couple of kids sitting in a dorm room adding urls to their directory. Finally it was too busy for them or any staff they could hire to handle the influx of urls, so they simply hid the submit link and stopped responding to people about their sites. Out of the frustration of trying to get your site into Yahoo came DMOZ.org, a supposed open directory. *

DMOZ.org is open the way that Harvard is open, no make that Augusta National. Anyone can apply but you ain't getting in, as an editor, and nowadays even as a site. And quite frankly, you aren't even getting response.

Wikipedia is a different kind of a club, but just as snooty. I submitted my site, Backcountry to Wikipedia and it was shown the door in about two weeks. I felt like a quaker** trying to get a job at the pentagon. The comments were that Backcountry is too commercial for wikipedia. Except for the the fact that they list Backcountry's largest competitors...which makes their logic flawed and capricious.

Thank you prejudicial peeps at Wikipedia, you helped me understand what I must build.

So I set out to combine the power of the wiki with the power of the directory. Using wikimedia's software and dmoz' database I hope to build the biggest directory of business in the world. Currently it stands at 430,000 pages, and growing. The beautiful part is that anybody can edit any page. No need to wait to see if your entry made it...the second your finish it, you're in. Granted if you are a spammer, you'll get dinged for adding a grillion urls that all run the same software with a different logo, but, well, we'll see how that part of it plays out.

For now it's live, and ugly, and getting better everyday.

    * Can you imagine hiding a link when people are begging to give you free content? ** I was raised Quaker, see...

Hmmm...sorry about posting links previously...are the ones I put above a violation? I was just trying to reference examples. Happy to delete 'em if it's a problem. I don't get to hang out here as much as I used to. Haiko used to love me enough to allow me some mojo, but sadly I'm newbie all over again.

I'm not all that impressed with the site. It has a spammy feel to it for the reason Michael mentioned. If I were to do something like this I'd take a completely different angle. Consider del.icio.us which is now the king of community driven link submissions. Their formula is much more up to date and emphasizes Web 2.0 much better than you have. Honestly, I wouldn't say the wiki concept is a strong Web 2.0 feature. It's one of the first 2.0-ish types of sites to appear, but the technology has gone much futher than that. Maybe once you remove some of the spammy content and start focusing more on newer Web 2.0 features, you might just have something.

    Hi,

In general I don't worry much about directories. There are two rules I follow:

Submit to as many free directories as possible

Do not submit to non free or reciprocal directories.=

I had a huge list of free directories Wikology was one of them, so I submitted my site. However I don't just rely on one directory. I guess it is not good to receive traffic, but just for the backlink.
