    Really?

Click on the word unsubscribe under the threads listed in the CP front page or click the link in the email notification that says "unsubscribe from this thread"
    Continued Success,

In the second box, the "Messaging & Notification" section, second box named "Default Thread Subscription Mode" set the drop down to "Do Not Subscribe"
    Continued Success,

At first, it irritated me too, but later it turned out to be a really useful tool to follow up replies.

Also, you can Subscribe/Unsubscribe using the 'Tools' menu at the top of a thread.

Which reminds me... I generally don't bother to subscribe to specific threads unless I find something especially interesting...

Instead, I subscribed to specific fora, then bookmarked my UserCP page. First, I go there to see if there's new stuff in the fora I really want to read, then afterwards I go to '<x> New Posts' link to see if there's anything else interesting.
