    Outside Links from Index Pages
    Just started using webmerge last night and I am stumped. I am trying to link to an outside file (pdf file on seperate server) from the index page. I want it do this while only displaying the descriptive text for the link, and not the entire link.

    I am using the nolink tag because I do not want a detailed page generated. I have tried embedding it into the field, but can only get it to display the entire link and not the descriptive text.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanx.

    Richard,

    This is what it looks like:

    [WM-Record]
    [WM-IndexLabel: Retail_Name]
    <tr>
    <td><h3>[WM-Field: Retail_Name]</a></h3></td>
    <td><h3>[WM-Field: City_Ad nolink]</h3></td>
    <td></td>
    <td></td>
    <td><h3>[WM-Field: Retail_Notes]</a></h3></td>
    </tr>
    [/WM-IndexLabel]

    <tr class="tablelight">
    <td><h4 class="indent">[WM-Field: Product_Title nolink]</h4></td>
    <td><h4>[WM-Field: Product_Region nolink]</h4></td>
    <td><h4>[WM-Field: Product_Price nolink]</h4></td>
    <td><h4>[WM-Field: Product_Size nolink]</h4></td>
    <td><h5>[WM-Field: Product_Notes nolink]</h5></td>
    </tr>
    [/WM-Record]

    Linking to outside sites/files from the index page works using the [WM-AccessLink: fieldName] tag. This does require some formatting on the datafeed however.

    Any pitfalls to using this tag?

    Thanks.

    Not if the data comes from a field of type Link in an Access database. Using that tag with any other data may yield unpredictable results.

    If the field contains a simple URL you can try using the raw and nolink attributes, a la:

    <a href="[WM-Field MyUrl raw nolink]">Click here!</a>

    Richard,

    Thanks for the info. Not quite sure what "field of type Link in an Access database" is exactly, but I am willing to try the raw attribute if it provides more stability.

    For the raw attribute: Is there a problem embedding the entire hyperlink "<a href="http://www.myurl.com">Click here!</a> into the field and then writting it: [WM-Field: Retail_Direct_Link raw nolink]? It appears to work, but how reliable is it?

    This is my example:
    [WM-Record]
    [WM-IndexLabel: Retail_Name]

    [WM-Field: Retail_Direct_Link raw nolink]
    [WM-If: Field: Retail_Direct_Link = ""]
    [WM-Field: Retail_Name]
    [/WM-If]

    The intent is to write a link to an outside site if available, and if not, generate and link to the detail page. From my very, very limited experience with webmerge it seemed the only way to use the conditions was to embed the entire link <a href...> into the field.

    Am I going in the right direction?

    Richard,

    So far, so good. Thanks for the tips.

    I like the product, looking forward to what I can do with it.
