If you are looking for a free one, eXTReMe Tracker is very good -- it is also public unless you are willing to pay for a non public tracker ($4.50 a month for private tracking).

Awstats and webalizer are good ones. Haven't yet tested out Google analytics (waiting for the invite) but have heard good things about them.

cheer up; many of us got some sites in there at first but can't add more right now. and all mention of even the possibility has disappeared in the past week or so.

Indextools.com is my choice. It's like Google Analytics but in real time, which makes it invaluable for adjusting Adwords campaigns and improving SEO. It starts at $19.95/mo. (they give you a 15 day free trial)

I usually hate doling out bucks for something I don't own, but in this case, it's integral to the money I've been making, so it's worth it.

For the same reason that the most popular nightclubs in NY and LA make you wait behind a velvet rope to let you in.

Scarcity always sells. It's human nature.

I've tried several over the years, but without question the best in my personal opinion is http://www.statcounter.com

It's got great depth and is extremely detailed, it handles multiple domains, and, it's free!

statcounter is great for sites that generate hundreds or thousands of pages from a feed.

but since the code is the same for each page, you won't be able to get per-page counts.

but it does work very well.
