How do I get old pages out of SE indexes? I have a boat load of old pages indexed for old sites. I am looking to retool the sites but SEs are still driving traffic to my old deleted pages.
I was thinking making a redirect from my custom 404 to the index.html. Is that ok to do?

in google's case you can hunt around in there for a page where you can tell them a certain page or site is long gone.
i think it is part of the page: google.com/addurl but not sure

if you still own the addy's maybe a 301 redirect would work?"Those who give up their freedom for a little security deserve neither freedom nor security" - Benjamin Franklin

301 is the way to do it.The Best Forums
Nothing in the world can take the place of persistance. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistance and determination are omnipotent.

301 is right. If G concerns you, throw in G sitemaps and you're doubly covered.
