Fix?? Do I need a new printer? Any advice?
I bought a Hewlett Packard Laser Jet 1100 back in February 2000 (6 years ago).

    I was a great printer

    Lately it hasn't been performing

Now I have a problem when wanting to print envelopes -- the envelope won't go through, the task dies.

I was trying to help a friend of mine: I wanted to print business cards on preforated paper suitable for creating business cards with Microsoft Word -- my printer wasn't functioning the way it used to

What should I do? Are there places that will fix laser printers?

Here and there my little Canon has acted up, and cleaning the print heads and especially the rollers always does the trick. Try going into "maintenance" for the printer and run through cleaning the roller, it can take doing several times to straighten out. It *may* be different for laser printers than inkjet, and if so, do whatever maintenance routines the instruction manual says to.

Else, printers are so cheap nowadays it could be cheaper to get a new one altogether than pay to have the old one fixed.

    Thanks for the advice

I might have to buy a new one but my Mom was wondering if I could get it fixed.

If it's not just the print quality you're having problems with but having other issues as well, perhaps try reinstalling the printer before you toss it on the junk heap.

    Thanks for your input.

What do you mean by reinstalling the printer?

Take the prongs out of the electrical socket?

Check to see if it is connected to the computer or what?

Does the printer give any error message when it can't pick up the envelope.

Invariably, printer jams are caused by a piece of freign material (usually a small piece of paper) somewhere in the paper path of the printer. HP Laserjets, the early ones anyway - talking Series II here - are extremely reliable and will last for years.

On drivers, I had a friend who took a hammer to a Epson inkjet printer because he thought the USB port on it had fried, only to discover later that it was his printer driver that was the problem. Heh heh.

    Cool
    >>>What do you mean by reinstalling the printer?

uninstall, then reinstall. sometimes a file gets corrupted over time and needs to be replaced.

cleaning all the rollers, usually with denatured or high-percentage rubbing alcohol can sometimes bring back enough friction to pull paper properly again.

and over the years small pieces of paper, cat hair, whatever, get caught in the nooks and crannies of the paper path and cause misalignment.

Get some compressed air and blow out any dust that may be inside the printer. I had it happen to a 3 year old printer and a good cleaning fixed her up.

Compressed air comes in aerosol cans (good for keyboards, too) and is available at any computer store.
