to http://www.textbookhound.com/

I use them, and they're still working as they should be.

I figure the ad links are cost of having a free service I'm too darned lazy to program in myself.

    Hi Parentsworld!

Well it was a bit strange, it only happened the once - I couldn't reproduce the effect. I wasn't a happy bunny tho. They are now replaced with Atomz who also do a useful internal link error reporting thing.

Their results aren't as pretty but they are all mine!

Maybe you somehow clicked one of their ads on a mistake?

I found a lot of scripts that will do a site search at bignosebird.com but I've just been too busy (or was that lazy) to do anything with them.

I thought about that, but it wasn't the case - the page I was redirected to was for a different company far as I could tell. It invited me to sign up as an affiliate too.

    Well they are history.

I didn't know you could get scripts to do searches :/ That sounds like something I should find out about!

Yeah, I had found a fair bit of them at one time, but never got around to doing anything about it.

Bignosebird.com is always where I start.

    Hi !

Are you sure you want to leave freefind on your site? My click throughs have just doubled now they've gone.

I like this smiley. This smiley is cute!

Click throughs from where? My traffic is almost more than I can handle, but the site has been around 8 years.

    Hi Francis,

You will be happy with Atomz. I have been using them on two sites for the last 18 months. I have never had a problem and I really like the weekly report. I get some usefull keywords from that.

So I need an opinion here.

I run what's 99.9% a content site. I'm not making nearly the money other people here are, but I'm not actively trying to either.

When should a site go from a free search feature to their own or does it even matter. I think last update I'm at over 80 pages of pure content so a search is indeed needed. Does it make a site look cheap to use a free search or do people really not care? Feel free to peek in at my site and let me know if it looks cheap having it there...

    Thanks for the Welcome Haiko!

Parentsworld: You have a nice site. I wouldn't worry to much about the search engine. It looks and feels as though it is part of your site. I would be a little concerned about those "sponsors" listings at the top of the search results page. Who knows how much traffic your losing.

Google and Yahoo, or maybe thats Yahoogle as I don't know how to tell the difference. My site has been around maybe six months.

I used to use them on a non commercial site a while back. I thought they were great, but then they vanished for a while and I replaced them.

Freefind looks good on your site - it doesn't scream 'this is free'.

Your site is about providing a service to parents mostly I think at least on a brief visit I didn't see anything that suggested a shop there except the books.

It seems you have a regular user base who trust you, and you know your subject. I'd put a 'shop' link at the top and build a kids mall from there. Then get rid of Freefind

Damien, thanks. It's been many years in the making. To keep me humble I have the original page printed out and on file...man, it sucked!

To be honest, hadn't really thougt about clicks I was losing. I always assume everyone thinks like me -- I searched the site, why would I click off site links? But, maybe not...maybe it's something I should consider.

francis, I don't even have a shop on my site -- well Amazon (and since we started the book club that's been driving in the money) and cafepress for mugs and stuff.

Single Parents are not known for their abundance of extra money -- most of my visitors are trying to gain or rebuild credit so ordering stuff online is out of the question. I'm still managing to presell ad space for $100/page with regularity. The money from CJ is just free pocket cash -- maybe $30/m from lead programs. I look at it this way, it pays the hosting and name registration, anything over that is extra

"lucky" for me, the dot com I worked for for the last 2 years just went under so I have some free time on my hands...maybe I'll look at finally putting in my own search!

Well... I would think discounts and coupons might be good. I understand single parents don't have lots of money but they still have to buy stuff. If you knew where to get it cheap...

    I'd start with night lights.

    It's been a learning game.

Credit cards -- one to build or rebuild credit have worked well. The free books from Harliquin started doing really well when I posted a "special limited offer" link at the top of the page.

My only remaining Linkshare merchant who pulls in more than all of CJ combined is supportkids.com (they go after child support for you). I wish they'd get off linkshare though.

And as I said, we started a book club and my Amazon.com sales have gone through the roof.

I put a lot of merchants up, thinking they'll do well, then end up taking them down after no success. I wish there were more family links then there are now but I guess they will (or will not) come in time.

Being a single parent myself, I think you would do well if you could find a merchant who sells valium by the crate load.

naaaaw...I don't think you're allowed to buy from your own link -- and I'd be buying lots!
