    What's it worth these days?
I got an email from someone looking to buy a domain from me. The domain is a good Brand name (not a famous one, but it can work).

It's the first domain I ever bought, but I never truly got off the ground with it. I just renewed the thing for another 10 years like a month ago.... wonder if he was camping it...

Either way, it's a PR4 with good inbound links and dreadful content

He claims the name fits nicely with where he's heading with it.

What should I ask for it? I've never sold a domain before... I also will not have time to really develop it in the near future, due to other projects on my plate...

The domain selling market is again picking up these days.

Without knowing the exact name and the niche, there are few ways to add value it :

    1. It is a PR4 so it has some value based on its PR (Yes, I know PR is not valuable these days but when buying/selling domains or sites, it does get into the picture)
    2. As you mentioned, it has got some good incoming links, so it has some value based on its inbound links
    3. Content - Depending on the uniqueness of content, it would have some value for it too.
    4. Brand - since it is a brand name, its value also added to it.

These are the parameters on which you can base your preliminary valuation of the domain. Find out other similar sales to find some hints.

I shouldn't have said Brand Name. It's a VERY catchy brandable name, especially for some areas (aquariums, scuba, water sports (REAL watersports), etc.)

Noth's question inspired me to search and to try to find a good answer.
When I initially found that site, to try out the service I typed in an url from someone I don't like
I found the site informative (at least things we can keep in mind when buying a domain name & developing a site) so I tried a couple of my own.
Considering this is a free appraisal, it offers some clues

Yeah well, http://www.urlbuyers.com/valuation.cfm said my same URL was only $500 (Common Sense Model), but considering it's a FREE appraisal service as well, it also offers some valuable clues.

That said, NewAff was right, now is the time to sell and sell high - if you can.

BTW, most of those domain valuation engines are just email harvesters.

    I tried both.

The one I suggested is interesting but the suggested retail prices were a tad overly optimistic

http://www.urlbuyers.com/valuation.cfm put a damper on my dream price

But hey even if I could get the prices promised by your suggestion after my initial $5 investment I would see

Most of these domain valuation companies are no good - they were hit at the time of the earlier dotcom boom when the valuations got into millions after the business.com sale.

These days, if you need to sell domains, what you need to command good value is :
    - an old domain, the older the better (this is gold)
    - good brand
    - also if the domain is getting good traffic, it would also help in getting a good price.

    Noth,
have a look at sedo for similar domain names listed as you mentioned. If you can find some earlier sales relevant to the above, you can get an idea of the value.

it's ironic sometimes that people will not buy your domain at your price, which may be lower than through an auction, and yet, will gladly go through the roof when bidding at an auction site.

    WTG,

    It's called validification.

I've seen some "so called" $10 domains sell for $10K in auction.
