Can an affiliate receive payment checks at a residential address in Los Angeles? Are there any laws regarding this type of business run from a home?

City of Los Angeles wants your money!
If you live in the City of Los Angeles, it is my understanding that you must have a city business license. A year or so back, it was well published in the news and papers that they were coming after anyone that did any kind of business in the City Of Los Angeles without a license.

Call city hall if your there in the LA proper or http://www.lacity.org/finance/finA.htm

Most local governments require a business license for everything. If they don't have a specific designation for your specific business, there is usually a general/catch-all license ...........Cost is 5 bucks to several hundred, depending on location.

Granted, most very small businesses fly under the radar and never buy a business license. Some local governments will do a sweep on occasion by checking directories in office buildings and listings in yellow pages or other advertisng directories. Penalty is usually a few bucks and the cost of retroactive licenses(negotiate).

If you plan to ignore the license, then it is advisible to make for a low profile. That means no local advertising, no yellow page listing, no sign in the front yard...................That is another thing. There are almost always regulations and fees for business signs...........OH WELL...

The LA tax office gets notified if you file a Schedule C for your business, so if you filed a Schedule C and didn't pay city tax you will get a notice of multi-year delinquency the following February and have to pay the tax from the previous two years as well as a fine.

If you file a Schedule C and live in LA you definitely have to pay LA city tax.

For most web based businesses the tax is about a $130 base plus a percentage of all your gross sales to LA residents. I want to say 3% but I'm not positive on that. Make SURE to put the same code for your city tax payment that you do on your schedule c. I put a different code and it caused a bit of a mess.

LA is one of the toughest places as far as the city going after folks so I would make sure your ducks are in a row. If not, they will definitely let you know.

whoa: are you actually doing business in your own city? are you advertising in the locals? on a local TV or radio station? are you set up with a storefront or signs on your car?

do you make a business presense there? if not, why stick your neck out?

    unless you file a C, of course . . .

    that's not nice.
