    What is Favicon.ico
When I go to view my Latest visitors in cpanel, I can see a directory then favicon.ico then with status of 404. Does this mean that people are bookmarking my site?

It *can* mean that, but not always. Some browsers request "favicon.ico" whether the user has bookmarked a page or not. I think Netscape does that, and there could be some others.

But, if I recall right, IE only asks for favicon.ico if someone has actually bookmarked you.

The favicon.ico file is the file for a custom icon that goes into your browser URL window to the left of your URL. It seems that this is requested regardless of whether the page is bookmarked or not.

Check this thread for more info on favicon.

Make your own favicon and save it to the root directory of your site and put an end to 404's created because there is no favicon.ico present.

And use the opportunity to brand yourself and add a professional feel to your site.

I use Alexbet for my logos and graphics and he'll make the favicon.ico files for you on a logo project. He includes the 4 variations of resolutions and sizes that are supposed to be in the single ico file so it gets max bang.

Here's a nice tool that will generate a favicon.ico from any jpg or gif file. I found this extremely useful:

I usually make my favico.ico as a .gif file then just rename it favicon.ico I find this the easiest way to make them.

I prefer it be in the ico format just for compatibility.

I usually do that too (convert a .gif to a .ico) and it works perfectly. Never have had a problem with that method.

    Convert or rename?
