I use whois.sc as well. Usually I'll just remove the www. from a domain I'm viewing and prepend it with www.whois.sc/ in order to look up the whois. Very straightforward.

whois.sc is the only site I've found and used from my web logs. Discovered it by people clicking to my site from my whois info.

    whois.sc for me, too.

I started using it after it was mentioned here.

But I've noticed clicks from there in my logs, too, that and their spider that gets the screenshots.

I have a Firefox extension installed called All-in-One Sidebar. When I am on a page, I just right click on my mouse and hightlight the option to check.

    It brings me here:

So that is my new favorite place because I love things that are simple!

Sorry for the Newb question, but what purpose does it serve to retrieve whois info? How is it used in this business?

Don't you want to know who are your neighbors? It's the ID behind an URL.

I use the whois of my name servers, whois.sc or DNS Stuff

Hey Zeus - thanks for the response.

I guess I dont understand - being a newb and all.

I have been trying to narrow my objectives down for starting my first site, and I thought I was missing something with the whois info.

Assuming the whois info is critical for success - how is it used?

or is this something I need not worry about right now.

Remember - Im a newb - so please be patient...

It's not critical for success but for a long career in this business you need to know who are your partners. There's many predators on the web and you don't want to be associated with them.
With the whois you have the name of who own a web site, contacts... and some technical information. Pretty useful to check the other properties of know parasites. To have the addresses of people stealing your code...
You don't want to live next to a pedophile, it's the same if you share a server. Websites on the same IP blocks... their activities...
Unfortunately, these information are hidden quite often.

    Oh - ok

that makes since. You dont want to find that your own site is in a bad ip neighborhood.

What about those people that hide their whois info via privacy features when setting up the domain?

And - how do you know when others are stealing your sales?

Thanks for the help - very interesting...

Well said Zeus.. these things are great investigative tools for digging around and determining what's what. So, when someone emails you claiming to be from the US, but you look at their website and find that it's hosted in the Ukraine, then something's not right.

Not really essential for success in affiliate marketing - but sometimes these tools (such as a good Whois server and things like SamSpade for Windows) are very useful.

It's never a good sign. But, some have legitimate reasons to do it.
"how do you know when others are stealing your sales?"
It's quite a broad subject, just read ABW, starting by the Parasiteware section.
