Alright, I feel that I am opening a can of spam here, but...

I need a present for my father-in-law. He is a professional (VP in a major company) and travels a lot. He won't give me hints on what he wants. He really doesn't have any hobbies (except work). And he doesn't like clutter. Any suggestions?

How about a book? You could go with a nice coffee table type book on whatever he is interested in.

Or, does he have a favorite movie star? You could get a movie of the star, a book about said star, a couple of bags of microwave popcorn or other treat he likes -- make a movie basket.

How about a purple tie! They are all saying how purple is THE color for a power tie these days. And it does not have to be bright purple. Get that and the book about the art of war -- nice power gift.

    Phil,

Although I am partial both Sun Tzu and Lao Tzu also

    I'd say ...

Cigars (if he smokes), Lighter or smoking jacket

MontBlanc 75th Anniversary Pens

LobsterGram (Cool Gift)

Bottle of Fine Cognac or appropriate

Sony Clie (or Palm)

Fine leather deskset (blotter etc)

A painting of family portrait (Artistique)

Cufflinks (if he wears FC shirts)

A recliner?

A YouTrek.com toque!
That's a good start.

You know the URL...there's all kinds of great GIFT BASKETS to choose from!

On a more serious spam, erm, NOTE:

How about a Lapstation? A portable workspace for wherever he goes. There's a big LINK on my site...

Or a desk from CollegiateMall. I can post the tracking (or lack of it) in that thread "Francis may have a good idea" that Packy started (or whatever it was called...I think it's in Merchant Fraud)

Oh, something I'm NOT selling? Does anything like that exist

    Let's see...non spam...

Haiko's got all the expensive manly stuff covered... (I think we've all read The Art of War now--first Vicki, then Haiko, and I've read it, too.) If he hasn't got a copy, that'd be good...

    Maybe wool car seat covers?

I've never seen a man who don't like leather slippers.

I do remember that microbrew beer was popular among execs a while back. If it still is, some really obscure (as in "exclusive" and "hard to get") microbrew might be exciting to him. Of course, it's the exclusivity that makes it good!

If he's not insulted by gifts of Money or forms thereof (some are, and I can never guess who will be! So only give it if you're sure it'll be okay...), there's a whole other world of things. Travel vouchers, gift certificates, etc.

    Good luck!

I think I'll get him a book. He has a few trips scheduled here soon. He has already read "war", but I may get him a book on Confucius. Thanks y'all.
(I am relly going to create that shirt and put it in his stocking.)

ah, one of my favorite gifts for corporate execs? high-quality crystal ball...

can be spun as a symbol of the exec's great wisdom and ability to see into the future, a sign of good fortune for a new company, or as a "little help" for the less adept.

probably not from a son-in-law, though.

    Sorry Jimbo,
Cookies never make him happy. Either they were chocolate when he wants PB, or he wanted almond and got sugar. Noone is ever happy with cookies.

I still think you need to follow my link (above post) and send him a bottle if fine cognac! I have had that page for a couple of weeks, and am looking forward to see where it lands in the next google index. $$$!

You can always do the magazine subscription thing. If all else fails, that usually does the trick.

I really hope you do and make sure you get a picture of him opening it so you can send it to other members of his family.

That reminds me, I should get my dad a t-shirt that reads "What I really wanted was that Tiger Woods book but all my son got me was this lousy T-Shirt".

Get him a pair of nice executive suspenders ( guess the URL it's easy) they all love the power trip it gives them ..plus all the girls love to tease by snapping them. That's an ego builder. Then get him the full 3 part set of the "Lord of The Rings"..never misses to amuse young or old. Long live the Hobbits and may they find Bin Ladens cave real soon.

Damn I post here too much.

    What's the budget???
If it's under $20: The "Moose Candy Pooper" is quite popular this year...perhaps you need to have moose roaming around to appreciate the humor, being from Oz a Wombat candy pooper is the last place I'd want to get my candy from....then, how about, one of those really cool, totally useless electronic
    toys exec's love!
Or a mystery night out, dinner a show, or something they haven't done for years...dinner, then on to the Zoo, museum or art gallery...! Or a champagne breakfast in a hot air balloon....I'll stop now
    I love giving gifts!
