Interesting. While phishing attempts are getting more sophisticated everyday, I have not seen ever one that addressed me by my full name. That should give people some clue.

I have a friend who owns a company that has developed (and is selling) a "phishing/identity fraud prevention server-based" piece of software. I talked to him about this article, and he summed the whole phishing phenomenon quite eloquently. He said: "It's very simple . . . people are the weakest link in the technology process". How true.

Phishing works because it elicits a gut emotional reponse.
The ones that don't work are easy to slough off but the well written ones will make you look twice.

Fishy Phishes about various banks have hit my e-mail. It's funny because something was wrong with non existent accounts that I supposedly had (those were easy to ignore).

Lately I've been bombarded by phishing spam about accounts at a bank I really belong to -- however, I foresaw that this might happen and never signed up for online banking. I never revealed the particular e-mail address to a bank and if I were to do so, I would have given out a preferred e-mail.

phishing works because a lot of people still doesn't know that such a scam exists, and even if they do, they don't know how it is being done exactly, so they assume immediately that the legitimate-looking emails they receive are legitimate.

if they know, i'm sure they would take a second look.
