1. Where's The Dollar? - Math Riddle
When three friends arrive at a hotel late night, they see that there is only one room with three beds available. They decide to share this room. They ask the young man at reception the room's rate, he replies: "30 dollars". Each took \$10 out of their wallet, paid and went up to their rooms.

After a little while, the receptionist realizes he made a mistake; the room's rate was \$25, but he took \$30. He calls the bell boy, gives him the \$5 dollars, and tells him go up the room and give this money back to three friends. On his way up to the room, the bell boy feels obliged to give equal share from \$5 to three friends. When he can't calculate the \$5 into three equal shares, he decides to give \$1 to each, and decides to give the other \$2 to the Red Cross.

Now, each of the three friends paid \$9 for the room, 3 x 9 = \$27 and the bell boy has the two dollars, it totals to \$29.

Where is the one dollar?

There is no extra dollar. Not so much of a math riddle, more of a logic riddle, how you look at it kind of riddle

Another way to look at it is there is \$30 in play.

Hotel has \$25 of it, gave \$5 to the bellboy (\$30)
Friend 1 got back \$1 of the \$5 from the Bellboy
Friend 2 got back \$1 of the \$5 from the Bellboy
Friend 3 got back \$1 of the \$5 from the Bellboy
Bellboy kept \$2

25 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 2 = 30

3. Or: Another way to say it: The 3 boys paid 9 dollars each, that totals 27 dollars. Of the 27 dollars paid total from the boys, 2 dollars went to the Red Cross. Must say though, even through I am a staff accountant, you had me goin!!!

Has to equal \$30. Tricky, headache inducing. It all goes awry when the bellboy didn't give them the \$5 like he should. If he did then they would have paid about \$8.33 each for the room.

5. I say they beat the crap out of the bell boy for taking their money in the first place, then take the \$20 or so he has in his pocket from his tips. Then the original 3 can have a free room and some money for beer! They will need lots of beer to be able to overlook all of the roaches and rats in a \$30 hotel room.

The first time I heard this riddle was around 1960, when \$30 paid for a very nice room. And I doubt if it was new then.

10. Three friends paid 3*9 = 27, and 2 for bell boy, 25 for room's rate.That's 25 + 2 = 27.
Or 3*9 = 27, and evey one got 1 dollar back. so that's 27 + 3 = 30.

2 dollars for bell boy are in \$27 they paid, the mistake is they add 27 + 2 .
Right one should be 27 + 3.3 dollars are what they get back.
