Fine..Call me stupid, but I just noticed...
...The posting of transactions appears to be batched for every hour of the day.

Has it always been like this?

All of my transactions generally have a posting time of xx:01, xx:02, or xx:03

and all this time i would check my sales in the middle of the hour!!!

Ha, it took me months to figure it out, too. I thought they were posted at random times, so I was hitting the refresh button like a maniac. Wasn't till after I was getting regular sales that I realized it was hourly.

    So you're not alone.

No, younguns, it hasn't always been like that.

There was a time, back in the 20th century when transactions really did post in real time (or something very close to it.) Actually I think transactions posting on the hour has only been around for about a year or so.

It's usually like that, but not always.

Once an hour, CJ takes the log files and "consumes" the log files, processing the raw data into their database. It usually just takes a minute or two to process, which is why most transactions show a posting time of :00 (or sometimes :01).

That also explains why they can take down the interface and say it doesn't affect tracking. Once they put the interface back online and start consuming the log files again, it catches up.

I've seen it run continually for up to 2 hours after a long upgrade. I've also seen transactions post on the half hour once in a while, presumably when they're processing special batches.

actually, i have now noticed that checking your transactions at the top of the hour doesn't matter. they can show up anytime, but will still be marked xx:00, xx:01, etc

there have been instances where a transaction may not show until xx:45, but will show as posted at xx:01

so i guess checking frequently will still make sense...

It started after the "upgrades" in the fall, so it's been around for 6 months or so. Sure makes it nice for you obsessive compulsive stat-checkers... as long as you ignore the rare postings at :30 that occur as Michael pointed out.
