And you thought you spent a lot on branding
I worked for Cingular for 6 years. The attached is one of the reasons I left. They spent money everywhere but on me...

This is strictly an ego trip for upper management. They are thinking in terms of the power that the name "AT&T" carried years ago.

I must admit that if the opportunity arose, I would feel "mighter" running an AT&T rather that a "Cingular".

Even with all the money spent on branding Cingular, the name is lacking. It has no personallity.

Anyone here remember Lilly Tomlin's operator character from "Laugh IN" way back in the days when AT&T was a monopoly?

Her standard line to customers was always, "We don't have to care. We're the phone company!"

I guess you have to spend a lot on branding when your co. name is a misspelled word...

What's interesting to me though, Sim, is I often think "singular" is mispelled when I see it now

I knew when SBC bought AT&T that they would change the name of the company to AT&T. In a few years, no one will remember who actually bought who. Changing SBC to AT&T was/ is actually a no brainer. Cingular change to AT&T wireless is a bit harder since cingular has made a name for itself in the cell market and AT&T wireless isn't the same as AT&T. But that being said, AT&T is one of the top 5 brand names in the US and having a common name for the landline and cellular network probably does make sense. Now they both divisions seem like they are part of the same company instead of 2 different companies.

Promoting Cingular as a name was a wise business decision when they did it and now that things have changed changing the name to AT&T wireless is also a wise business decision.

Time will tell. In the age of bundled services, singular branding ( ) is important.

The wireless target market is young however, and may not recognize AT&T as well as they recognize Cingular.

Every time my phone rings and I hurry to get to it before the answering machine picks up I say (outloud or in my head) "One ringy-dingy, two ringy-dingy, ..."

And any of us who used to use AT&T Wireless will remember the awful service and coverage. Maybe it's better now, but I'll never know.

    Good point, Michael.

I still have a lot of friends in B2B sales and marketing at Cingular. It's interesting that the second the AT&T Wireless merger was completed, the B2B channel started adopting the AT&T structure over the Cingular structure.

The problem with that? Cingular was crushing AT&T in sales.

Beats me as to why they headed that way.

Haw-Haw... That's funny ... I never thought about it, but your statement makes a lot of sense... Maybe that's why it never quite caught on.
